She stood in front of the road in pitch black, the rustling forest that lined the road dancing in the wind. She had always imagined that she'd die in a peaceful place, with her love by her side. But he was not by her side. Instead, she'd join him and their newborn son under the earth. Both of them were taken from her far too soon and she would never forgive fate for screwing her over in such a way. Her entire life had been pulled out from under her when he was murdered, when she had found his lifeless body within their home, broken and bloodied from what seemed to be a break-in.
And then her little boy was taken too. As his mother, she should have seen the signs of his failing health and realized he needed help. But how could she? She was grieving the death of the love of her life and couldn't find the strength to look at her son without thinking of him. It was her fault. That was what she believed, even if it weren't entirely true.
The woman took in a sharp breath, seeing a car speeding down the road in the middle of the night. She took a step forward, her warm blonde hair blowing in the soft summer breeze. "Mom?" She stopped in her tracks, turning around to see her adopted daughter who was breathing hard. She must have been running. But then it hit her. There was still something she needed to live for in this world. Her daughter who had been with her even before she had met and felt such a powerful love for her spouse.
The little girl she had adopted so long ago had grown into a beautiful young lady who was getting ready to enter high school. It had always been the two of them, taking on the world together. How could she have forgotten? A single tear ran down the woman's face as she gazed at her daughter. The girl reached out her arms and her mother walked towards her, embracing her and weeping. "I'm so sorry...I love you. You are my life."
The two of them fell to the ground in their embrace and watched the car pass by. As it passed and the bright headlights flashed in their eyes, the woman saw a glimpse of her husband in the light of it. Though it was only for a quick second, she could make out his relieved smile and his dark brown hair. Holding each other with one arm, they walked back through the woods to their home.
