I sat on the bed in the same room I had woken up with hours ago. it was strange, having my own room to myself. The plush bed was softer than feathers and I had fallen asleep once or twice in the past hour. I had heard Mr. Kensington on his phone in the study above me, talking about ordering something, I wasn't quite sure.
I was now pacing my room, hands folded behind my back. I had really messed up this time, and I would beforced to be sent back to the labs. At least I belonged there...
It brought back memories though. I was one day sitting in the heavily secured room with Effie at the tiny desk they had supplied me with. Effie was standing before the chalkboard and writing down something on the paper she was holding.
"Effie..." I had said. She had whipped around, the trendy tie she was wearing over a blouse and black vest floppier than her hair.
"Yes Ara?" She asked sweetly.
"What are you writing?"
"A story Ara. My father had told it to me when I was young and I couldn't get to sleep." Effie had said softly. She placed down her clipboard and chalk and took a seat on the side of my desk before speaking.
"There once was a girl who had messy blond hair, a large lumpy nose, and squinty brown eyes. Everyone made fun of her and called her 'Broken-nosed' or "dust-head." She had problems too, and secrets beyond telling, but this girl had what no one else had." Effie stopped and sighed.
"Effie, this girl-"
"Yes, this girl was me Ara. This girl is both of us. A freak beyond compare, but we have something Ara." She said softly, tucking a curl behind my ear.
"We both see the world in a better way. We see it as something beautiful, while others see it as a useless thing they think is theirs. We have better senses, we want freedom while others have it and just want more."
Tears came to my eyes, both in the flashback and in real life.
"Effie..." I had trailed off but the doors had opened and our lesson was over for the day. I wish I had known not just for the day, but forever.
