"Good morning, children."
———I knock twice, announcing my entry.
"Dr. Brenner?"
"Good morning, Ms. Morgan."
I smile awkwardly, "Is everything alright?"
It's hard to pretend to be civil when I know that he lied to me.
This morning when I walked into the nurses office, Michelle told me that Dr. Brenner wanted me to come to his office as soon as possible.
He nods, "Of course. How is you head?"
"It's good, it didn't even leave a mark."
He smiles, "I'm glad."
Silence over takes us for a moment before he motions for the chair in front of his desk, "Take a seat Ms. Morgan."
I took a seat nervously and waited for him to tell me why I was here.
"We are going to relocate you to another area of the building."
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding. I then nod, urging him to continue.
"Based on your performance with the children, we believe you would do well in the rainbow room. You are too watch over the numbers, and accompany them to training."
"Yes, sir." I say politely, "When do I start?"
"Now would be wonderful."
He gives me a once over before dismissing me.
As I walked out of the room the only thing I could think about was how strange he was being compared to my last encounter with him.
He seemed much more solemn and stern.
I walked down the hall towards the rainbow room.
As I walked down the hallway I felt my nerve begin to grow. I have no clue why I'm being moved here, and I highly doubt that it's because of my performance with children.
I know that that's not the only reason for my nerves, but I can't quite place what it is. It's not from fear, but something else. I'm just not sure what.
When I open the door my eyes go to Peter and I immediately know the cause of my nerves.
He approaches me, giving me a once over with his azure eyes before saying, "Do you need something?"
I fight back a snarky comment at his passive aggressive tone, "I was relocated here."
His eyebrows furrow, creating a crease, "Why?"
I could hear the hint of concern in his voice, but it was masked by confusion, "I'm not sure."
He nodded and then asked, "Are you aware of your responsibilities?"
"I have been."
"Alright." We stare at each other for a few long seconds before he shakes his head and says, "Well go fine something to do then."
I roll my eyes and walk away, seeing a young girl playing with a peg board that was sitting upright. She would drop a wooden circle down it and try to get the highest number.
I approached the girl and sat down next to her, "Hello," I looked down and saw her wrist, "Eleven."
She looked at me apprehensive before greeting me with a hello.
"How do you play this game?" I ask, smiling at her.
Without saying a work she demonstrates by dropping the circle into one of the slots, letting it fall. She scores a six.
I continue to smile and say, "Let me give it a shot."
I repeat what she did, but unlike her, I scored a two.
I huff out a laugh, "Looks like i'm not very good at this game."
She smiles lightly, finding it amusing.
We alternate playing for a little bit, before she speaks up for the first time, "What is your name?"
I grin at her becoming more comfortable around me, "Chrissy."
"You are kind, Chrissy."
My heart melts a little at her words, "Thank you, Eleven, I think you're kind too."
At my words she gives me a smile.
I'm about to take a circle and drop it in, when Dr. Brenner walks in the room.
All of the children, including Eleven, go to stand around him, forming two lines.
I stay on the floor looking at this strange interaction. I feel someone's eyes on me and look over to Peter to see him staring at me wide eyed, nodding his head up a bit.
I mouth the word, "What?" to him and he rolls his eyes before aggressively mouthing the word, "Up."
I quickly look around the room to see the children, the employees, and Dr. Brenner, all waiting for me to stand up.
Embarrassed, I quickly jump to my feet.
Dr. Brenner clears his throat, "Good morning, children."
"Good morning, Papa." They all say in unison.
"Are we ready for some group lessons?"
"Yes, Papa." They all say.
Without another word, he walks out of the room, all the kids following behind, staying in their respective lines.
The employees and myself all follow behind.
