"I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy."

"This game is pretty simple," Dr. Brenner starts off, "the goal is to not let the ball hit you."
I stood next to Peter by the wall opposite of the door.
"I will place the ball between two of you and you will pick it up and try your hardest to move it away from you."
Dr. Brenner looked at the children lined up against the wall, "Two and Five go first."
The selected children walked to opposite ends of the ball, getting into ready position.
I gasped lightly when the children began to make the ball float.
I shook my head and whispered, "Crazy..."
Peter looked down at me and gave me a strange look before going back to watching the children.
What was that about?
Dr. Brenner watched intensely as the children focused very hard on pushing the ball away from them.
It was a bit disturbing to see them fighting this hard. They had both broken out in a sweat, and were shaking.
All of the sudden, BAM.
The ball flew into Five's chest, sending her tumbling backwards.
She hit the ground with a loud thud, and let out a groan of distress.
Once again, I let out a gasp, shocked that this type of abuse was being tolerated.
Peter quickly swatted me in the side, I got the hint and shut my gaping jaw.
———
Child after child, they all got knocked to the floor by Two's grip on his abilities.
It pained me to see them being hurt like this.
The last child on the chopping block was Eleven.
I saw her nervously stand where all the other numbers have stood before, before getting into her ready position.
The ball lifted and the kids were back at it.
With most of the children the exchange went down pretty quickly. Lasting no more than ten seconds, but Eleven was putting up a fight.
Thirty seconds past and the ball is still up in the air.
The ball starts to inch closer and closer towards Two.
I felt my entire body stiffen up when he let out a blood curtailing scream.
I bit my lip, feeling terrible for both of the children.
Sadly, just like the others, Eleven was hit. She went down hard, just like the rest of them.
She picked herself up off of the floor and walked to the wall where all of the other numbers were sitting.
"Great work today, children." Papa turns his attention to Two. "You may have another hour in the rainbow room."
He looks back at all of the children, "The rest of you are to retire to their rooms for the rest of the night."
The children then began to walk out of the room, and all head to where I assume they sleep.
Brenner turns to us, the employees, "You are dismissed."
I leave without another word, walking down the hall towards the boiler room that I have become well acquainted with.
I was so deep in my thoughts that I didn't hear Peter walking slightly behind me.
We continue walking in silence.
The two of us arrive at the boiler room, and I immediately find a place on the floor and sit down.
No one says a thing until he says, "See, lab rats."
I shake my head, "I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy."
The man walks over and sits next to me on the floor as silence over takes us once more.
That was until I broke it when a question arose, "How did you end up working here?"
"That really isn't any of your business is it?"
I nod, understanding his need for privacy.
The familiar feeling of awkward silence creeps up again, but before it can fully consume us he sighs.
"I can't explain much," he begins, "but I was brought here as a child."
I look over at him, "How old-"
"Twelve." He cuts me off.
I nod, not asking him to elaborate further because I knew this must have been a sensitive topic.
I lay my head back against the wall and silence consumes us for the last time. Unlike before, it wasn't an awkward silence. For the first time it was comfortable.

November 29, 1978,
I met a girl today named Eleven. Unlike most of the other kids, she was playing by herself. I was in the rainbow room with all of the children today. They went to do their training and I had to accompany them. It was disturbing to say the least.
As much as I hate to admit it, I think Peter is growing on me. He's a dick, don't get me wrong, but he's the only one who hasn't lied to my face. Today he told me that he has been at the lab since he was twelve. I'm not sure how old he is, or how many total years he has been there. Based on what he told me a few weeks ago, he doesn't have a home to go to. He stays at Hawkins Lab twenty four seven.
My main goal a while ago was to figure out my true identity, and the get the hell out of dodge. That still is my plan, but this time I'm adding another aspect to my plan. Another person to my plan. I'm running away from Hawkins, and I'm taking Peter Ballard with me.Until next time,
