Chapter 15
My alarm clock went off at 5:30, just like it did every morning. I, however, did not. It was Monday and I didn't want to go to school. I was depressed and didn't want to have anything to do with anyone, let alone school.
I heard a hesitant knock on my door. Ignoring it, I rolled over towards the wall. “Abby hunny. Can I come in?” Asked my mother from the other side of the door.
Sighing, I sat up and croaked a yes.
She cracked the door and stuck her head in. But when she saw me and my red eyes she immediately opened the door and came to my side. “Abby, whats wrong? I haven't seen you this upset since what happened with Mike.” She grabbed me and pulled me into a motherly hug.
“Come on sweet pie. Whats going on in your life? Spill the beans.” She said with a slight shake.
I couldn't help but laugh because my mother is a dork like that. But, I could always talk to my mom. She was that kind of person. And, she has excellent advice.
“Well, its about Jeremy.” I said, as I pulled away a little so I could see her face.
Her face lit up. “Ooooh! Boyfriend drama.” She squealed and clapped her hands. I couldn't help but smile at her childish attitude. But that is how my mother is. “I love these! Ok. Whats the scoop?”
“Well, he...um...kinda....aahhh...told me he loved me?” It came out as a question, only because I didn't know how she would react.
And I was right. She blanked out for a minute, like she was starring off into space, then she looked at me. And then what happened I totally didn't expect.
She screamed! So loud it felt like she pierced my ear drums. I covered my ears and ducked. “Mom!” I yelled. She stopped and looked at me. Her face was red from the exertion. Then a huge smile took over her face and she jumped off my bed and started dancing around chanting, “My daughter has a first love. My daughter has a first love!”
I started laughed, but then stopped and watched. When I didn't jump off the bed and join in her dancing and singing she stopped. “Whats wrong sweet pie? Aren't you excited?” She sat back down on the bed.
She just had to go and ask that question.
“Well. I am. I am just nervous.” I said, looking down at the comforter.
“Well, that's normal sweetie.” She said, rubbing my back. “You just need to make sure you are ready. You are almost 18. Ah! My baby is almost 18! What ever will I do?! I remember when you were just a little runt...”
“MOM!?! Runt?! Really?! Why? I am soo not a runt!” I interrupted.
“Yes. You were. Just because you aren't now doesn't mean you weren't then!”
“Mom! That is so mean!” I play swatted at her arm.
“Yeah? And? What you gonna do about it?” She said, faking her impression of her favorite movie. Scarface. Ya, I know.
I rolled my eyes. Then things got serious again. “But like I said, you just need to make sure you are ready for that next step. Have you told him?”
“Well no.” I said blushing a bit.
“Have you thought about whether or not you love him back?” She asked.
“Well ya. That would explain the tear tracks down my face and the, what I would assume, red eyes.” I said pointing at said things.
She nodded her head and looked at me thoughtfully for a minute. “This has to do with Mikey doesn't it?”
See...told you she was one smart cookie.
That sentence however, had me breaking into an all-out cry fit. She grabbed me and pulled me to her shoulder. I cried for a good 5 minutes and the sobs wracking me were really bad too. When I calmed down enough, she pulled me to look her in the face.
“Sweetie. I know you probably don't want to hear this, but if you let what happened to you when you were 10 control your love life now, you will never let anyone have that love that is locked so tight in your heart.” She emphasized with a pat over my heart. “You have had that love locked in your heart so tight ever since what happened. You need to allow someone to get in there. The only way to learn is to go through the experiences thoroughly. If you love Jeremy, which I honestly hope you do, then you need to say it. Tell him with all your heart.” I went to say something, but she shushed me and continued. “I know it seems that you are opening your heart preparing for heartbreak, but trust me, it seems that Jeremy may be that one boy, that one man that will take you for a massive emotional ride and you wont know what to do with it. But, he also seems like the kind of guy that will love and care for you until you are both old a gray.” She smiled.
I smiled back. “Thanks mom.” I hugged her. “You sure your not Gandhi? Or even Yoda? Cause you have some smarts there mom.” I smiled.
“No, but I do have years of experience. Plus,” She lowered her voice and looked around the room like she was checking if anyone was in hearing range. “I am a mother that would some day like grand babies.” Then she was up off the bed and heading towards the door.
“Mom!” I shouted while laughing. I heard her shout her parting goodbye and close the door. Her car started up and she was gone.
I laughed and gathered my clothes for the day and headed for the shower. While I was showering my mind started processing what my mother told me.
Maybe she's right. Maybe I need to open my heart and love. I do have love in me that I could let free. And I bet he would appreciate it. Like he has told me, there is just something about him that draws me to him. I wish I knew what it was. I loved his shaggy hair, the way he kisses me or touches me. Sometimes I feel as if I could get lost forever in his gaze. I love being with him and spending time with him.
Maybe that means that I love him.
Once I was dressed, and ready for school, I heard a car door shut. Figuring it was Jeremy, I walked to the door preparing to open it and just out right tell him. When I heard the light rap on the door, I took a deep breath and opened the door.
“Jeremy. I love you.”
“Well that's nice, but I'm not Jeremy.” I looked up as I heard that familiar voice and my jaw dropped.
“Mikey.”
