Evangeline sighed deeply and tucked a long platinum blond curl behind her ear as they pulled into the driveway of their new home. When she first found out about the move a year ago she had been devastated. She was born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts. It was all she had ever known. It was her home. And suddenly it had all been snatched away from her just like that when her mother had told her they were going to be moving to Beacon Hills, California. Just like that it was all gone, her family, her life, her friends. Or more like people she had once considered to be her friends.
She had tried desperately to convince her mother to change her mind. Practically begged her.
"Mom, please! I can just change schools or something! We don't have to move! Doesn't that seem a bit drastic to you? I mean, we don't even know anyone in California, no friends, no family. Our home is here! We can't just leave! And what about Grandma? We're the only family she has! How do you think she's going to feel when you tell her you want to move a million miles away? To the middle of nowhere!"
Her mother had just shook her head, her mind already made up, "Eve, please! You're being dramatic. Your Grandmother is going to be just fine. She thinks that this move is a good idea. And it's not like we can't visit. Or she can't come and visit us. Besides, with everything that's happened, I think that getting a fresh start would be good for us. And I've been promised a great job when we get there. We just can't afford to pass up this kind of opportunity honey!"
"But California Mom!" Eve exclaimed in frustration as tears threatened to spill over her sea blue eyes, "Why does it have to be so far?"
Her mom sighed while brushing the hair out of her face. She stood in silence for a moment, pinching the bridge of her nose, before she sat the both of them down on the living room couch.
"Honey I know that this is hard for you. It's been hard for everyone. And I know that this has affected you the most. But my hope for this move is that we can get away from all of that. From everything that happened. Start new. Make a better life for both of us. Don't we deserve that? Don't you deserve that?"
Eve was quickly pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of her mother's car door being abruptly opened. Her mother shared the same bright blue eyes and blond curls as her daughter. And at that exact moment, her mother was currently beaming at her excitedly through the open car window.
"Well, this is it!" Her mom said looking up at the house with joy for a moment before closing her car door, "Come on then! Let's get moving! This car isn't going to unload itself!"
Eve hopped out of her mom's black Escalade quietly, pulled her curls up into a messy bun, and popped her headphones in before turning to help unpack the car hesitantly.
She and her mom were unloading their boxes and luggage from the car when two of their new neighbors walked over. An older man in a sheriff's uniform and a tall, brunette boy, who looked to be around Eve's age. Her mom nudged her, signaling for her to take out her headphones. Eve sighed but complied, she wasn't really in the mood to socialize. She was tired from the long flight and the drive to the house. All she wanted to do was get the things inside as quickly as possible so that she could relax before she had to worry about her first day of school tomorrow. And yet she was watching her mom smile at their new neighbors and walk over to the edge of the driveway as they made their way over.
"Well hello," Her mother said giving them her warmest smile.
The man reached out his hand to shake her mom's, "I'm sorry I hope we're not intruding. We heard a while back that we were going to be getting some new neighbors, and we've seen the movers coming in and out of this place for a while now. I just thought we should introduce ourselves. I'm Noah Stilinski. I'm the sheriff here in Beacon Hills. This is my son, Stiles. We live just two houses down across the street."
