Don't go - A short, short story...

His last words before he walked out the door are running through my mind; "Don't worry. Everything will be fine. This has happened before... I love you sweetheart. Take care of yourself, and I will call you when I can." I still feel his hand on my cheek as he kissed me on the forehead and then my lips.

He's walking to his car, not glancing back as the rain comes down. I place my hand on the sliding glass door in the living room, watching him. Please, just one last look...before you leave. I need to see your smile one last time. My face is getting warm and my eyes are slowly beginning to water. I don't know when he'll be back-nor does he. Sometimes, when this happens...I don't hear from him for weeks-months. "Please be careful out there," I murmur as he opens the car door and I can't help it-I don't even notice that...as I hear him in my head, as I watch him out there starting the car and as I have memories flashing through my mind, my hands are balling into fists so tight my nails will eventually break my skin.

He finally looks up at me. I suck in my bottom lip. He puts his fingers over his lips for a moment, then touches his hand to the windshield. I quickly catch the kiss and almost take my time returning it-just so it's a little longer before he goes-and he gradually smiles back, mouthing 'I love you'.

"I love you too." I say, soon covering my mouth to refrain from letting my feelings out any more than they already have. He looks in the rear-view mirror and backs out of the driveway, then...he takes off.

I sigh, let my forehead hit the glass and shut my eyes, wrapping my arms around my form.
