Dylan's heart was in his throat. It felt like he had been running for hours. He decided he should look behind him and see if the men were still on his trail. Nothing. He had either outrun them, or they had just given up. Still, he kept going. He was so sore he couldn't even feel the pain in his legs anymore. Wait he thought. What about Katie? He stopped. He hadn't stopped for so long that he skidded across the ground and fell flat on his face. The feeling of soft mud on his face almost felt like a relief. He got up and sat down on a nearby sump to catch his breath and catch up on what just happened. Okay Dylan. thought. think. He felt too tired to hold himself up so he slid down to the ground and rested his back on the side of the stump. Okay, I was running. I was with Katie. They took my parents. That's a start. he sighed and wiped a bead of sweat off his forehead. Now, what happened to Katie? She was just with me. Did they take her? Then a horrible realization sprung into his head. While they were running he was far ahead of Katie yelling at her for running so slow. Then he heard a gunshot. Oh my gosh. One of them must have shot Katie. He started shaking. She's dead, she's dead! Dylan couldn't believe himself. She's gone! Then he came to realize how alone he was. How even though he thought Katie was a burden, he needed her. Now she was gone. Then he almost collapsed onto the ground if it hadn't been for the stump and the last bit of strength in his body. But now to think that His sister was dead, and soon will be his parents, if they're not dead already, made Dylan long for another person with him, for him to be with Katie and his parents, even if they were captured, to be together. He stood up. But with the help of the big mossy stump. He began to walk in the direction he came from. I couldn't have ran really far, could i? He tried to run but he only regained strength to walk. No, I'm probably, what, a mile deep?
