Chapter 2

     Light.

That was the first thing I could see through the blackness. This bright golden rays started to get brighter and brighter. Finally, I thought all my worries and fears were going away, but before the light could swallow all of it my eyes snapped open.

I was sleeping and all that time I thought everything was gone. My focus was fuzzy a little, my eyelids trying to stay focused. That's when I say the light from my mind pour through my window. I looked around trying to remember why I slept on the floor. I started to stand up but pain and numbness shot through my legs, going all the way up to my shoulders. I fell back down, my butt making a loud thud on wooden floor. Then it hit me that I fell asleep crying after another fight with me and my aunt.

I took a deep breath and stood up again. It was a little hard at first but I managed to do it; I crossed my room and looked at myself in the mirror. I was a mess; hair all tangled up, clothes wrinkled together, bags under my eyes. Old hag flew across my head. I turned about to get ready when the door opened and a maid came in.

"Sorry to disturb you, I didn't know if you were awake or not", she said her petit little body moving around. She grabbed my wrist before I could say anything and started getting me ready.

"Good morning Carrie and no I wasn't sleeping, besides what's the rush is somebody here", I asked still trying to wake up and also to keep up with Carrie.

Carrie, my personal maid, has been with me since I was born. Though she is over a thousand years old, she acts and looks younger. She has long dark drown hair and dark brown eyes. Her height is the same as mine,5ft, and she has lots of freckles.

"Oh yes Vanessa Hayes is here and she looks terrible, just awful", she said raking a comb through my curly jet black hair. That stilled me in way I couldn't describe.

After Carrie was done with my hair she went straight for the door,

      "Courtney are you coming?"

I shook my head to clear my thoughts of why Vanessa would be here, and left my room to go see her. Vanessa was waiting in the study and when Carrie opened the door, immediately, I knew something was wrong. I rushed over to the couch next beside the wooden desk across the room. I started hugging her, she was crying so hard at first I couldn't understand what she was saying.

"Courtney it's not fair, he can't do that to me, he needs to know he is ruining my life", she said going off in an angry rant.

"Hold up.....hold up", I held up my hand to her.

"I am not understanding, just start from the beginning okay"? I pushed aside her shoulder length medium brown hair over her pale skin.

"Okay", she said taking a deep breath and started speaking again. This time her voice was controlled and normal.

"I was walking home as usual with James Hightower, when I got him I saw Simon walking out the back door. I went into my dad's office and asked him what Simon was doing here. He said that Simon asked for my hand in marriage and my dad said yes and he won't change his answer!" she yelled that last part. She took a deep breath and continued with the story.

"The worst part of this shit is that dad won't let me see James anymore. I hate my dad so much. I don't love Simon I love James", tears started pouring down her face again. I hug her again, tight. She stopped crying after a little.

"I am sorry I have been ranting on I am probably wasting your time; sorry again Courtney", she started to get up but I grabbed her arm and pulled her back down.
