They were shocked when they arrived

But it wasn't in a good way. It was more in a "is this seriously the dance that all of the movies hype up?" sort of way. The scene itself was very underwhelming, at least to Cole and Kai. Everything just looked like a typical high school dance to them. The DJ was set up on stage with a computer hooked up to the sound system, blasting some hits from the early 2010's. The beat and bass pulsed throughout the entire community center gymnasium, and straight into the bodies of the two boys. I mean, it was fun, but it really wasn't what Hollywood hyped it up to be. Instead of an entire crowd of people jumping up and down, waving their arms and hollering like this was a rave, only a few groups of people were actually dancing. The rest of the crowd was just talking amongst each other, laughing and joking around. A few loners sat alone on the bleachers, phone in their hands. Their mother's most likely forced them to go. Poor kids. Was this seriously what they paid 15 bucks for?

"Is it weird that I expected...more?" Kai asked, breaking the silence between the two.

Cole shrugged in response. "If it is then I'm weird too. I thought there would be...I don't know."

"Maybe it's not that there's something missing, I think Hollywood kinda fucked us over huh?"

Cole snickered. "Most likely. Hollywood's well...Hollywood."

"Exactly. Let's just try and have fun while we're here, maybe we'll run into some people we actually know!" Kai said with an optimistic tune as he led Cole further into the gymnasium by the hand. Cole had to admit, the scene was kind of intimidating. Ever since he was little, he hadn't been fond of loud spaces. But he'd never admit it out loud. Only Kai and his own mother knew that, and he preferred to keep it that way. Cole tried to focus on something to keep his mind from spiraling out of control. He picked up the tune of the song that was currently playing, and recognized it almost immediately.

"Are they seriously blasting Blow by Kesha?" Cole laughed. "Dude this song came out when we were like, what, seven?"

Kai scoffed as if Cole had just asked the stupidest question known to man. "Uh, of COURSE they're blasting Kesha! She's the queen of party music dude,"

Cole shrugged, "Yeah, still this song is old as hell, never thought they be playing it at prom,"

"You sound like an old man when you say that, you know that right?" Kai teased as he poked Cole on the bicep.

Cole laughed and rolled his eyes. "Shut up Kai."

Kai continued to watch the prom from the sidelines. Multiple people were dancing, some were drinking out of red solo cups, and some people, mostly girls, were huddled in little groups giggling and talking amongst themselves. Kai wasn't exactly fond of school dances, but he did like a good party now and then, much unlike Cole who completely despised them altogether. It made him wonder why he even asked him in the first place. Did he feel obligated to out of tradition? Probably, it sounded like Cole. Whatever, Kai didn't want to think about that right now. He just wanted to try and give Cole a good time. He looked around, trying to find an activity they could both do together, when his eyes made a beeline to the dancefloor, almost like it was instinct. "Wanna go dance?" Kai asked, looking up at Cole. "I gotta admit, I've always liked Kesha's music."

Cole chuckled lightly as he shook his head no. "Nah man, I can't dance to save my life. I'll just tap my foot on the sidelines,"

Kai only scoffed at Cole's answer. "Oh hell no, you came to this dance, you're dancing with me dammit!" Kai teased as he took Cole's hand and began to lead towards the dance floor. "You can't just stay on the sidelines forever like a loner. You gotta come out of your shell every once in a while"
