"Harvard graduate Lee Taemin, 30, has been elected the youngest ever leader of one of South Korea's major parties, the PPP (People's Power Party), in what is viewed as an impending generational shift in politics as young people become more vocal and demand more changes in the country.
Mr. Lee was elected on Friday (June 11) during the conservative party's national convention, beating four political veterans including four-term lawmaker Na Kyung-won, 57, and five-term lawmaker Joo Ho-young, 61.
Mr Lee won 43.8 per cent of the votes, while Ms Na came in second with 37.1 per cent.
Similar patterns can be observed in its rival party the DP (Democracy Party) where Choi Minho, 32, has been elected as the representative for his respective party, making him the youngest to achieve anything alike within the DP.
Tonight, they are here in our studio to discuss the raise of interest towards politics within South Korea's youth and their desire to take part in national decision making as well as the general shift towards a younger generation with worldviews and ideals that differ tremendously from previous generations.
Welcome with me tonight, Lee Taemin and Choi Minho."
One last time, Taemin pulled at his tie, straightening it, before he walked out onto the stage, a warm applause welcoming him as he bowed to the audience.
From the other side of the stage, Choi Minho made his way to the seats, waving towards the audience just as he did. He carried himself as elegantly as always, long legs accented by his perfectly fitted dress pants. Following the customs, they met in the middle of the stage, bowing to each other while shaking each other's hand.
Minho's hand was hot and tightly gipped onto his smaller one, and Taemin knew that he was holding it for just a second too long than he would have if it was someone else. The younger reciprocated the squeeze and immediately saw a small smirk appear on Minho's lips. It was settle enough for no one but him to notice but it was enough to have Taemin grit his teeth.
"Nice to meet you again Mr Lee." Minho said before letting go of the other's hand.
"It has been a while." Taemin replied before bowing to the moderator who gestured them to take their seats on the stools behind the high desks.
Finally having time to collect his thoughts, Taemin focused his attention on the man speaking, knowing that Choi Minho was going to do the exact same so there was no reason to waste another second thinking about the older man.
"I am pleased to have you two here with me." Park said and they reciprocated his greeting:
"It's wonderful to be here again." Choi replied and Taemin held back from rolling his eyes. He hated Choi Minho's goodie-two-shoes attitude more than he could ever explain.
"Likewise." he just answered, not bothering.
"Has it been a year? Many things have changed since I have last had you in my studio, Mr Lee, you have been elected as the representative for the PPP just a month ago as the youngest official to have ever been put into office in our country. How are you feeling about this extraordinary honour?"
Now it was Taemin's time to smirk. He tried to tone it down, but to see Choi Minho's desperate try to hide his emotions when Park talked about his achievement first, was everything he had ever wished for.
"You flatter me, Mr Park. Rather than calling it an honour, I would say that I was lucky to have gotten this opportunity and that I will do all in my might to represent the PPP and their values in upcoming debates and the presidential elections next year."
