I pulled the knife out of the zombie's skull and wiped it on its shirt. I walked into the station repeating the process as I went on. When I was certain the building was empty I started dragging out the bodies. After I finish moving into my temporary home I'll burn the bodies.
After stashing my bike by the side door of the station and closing the gates I pulled the bodies into a pile. Once they start burning the smell should keep a few zombies from noticing me and if humans were to come by, it might keep them away too. I took some sticks and branches from a nearby tree and attempted to light the corpses. Once I was sure the fire was ablaze I headed inside.
I suppose it's safe to assume that the station was built or remodeled right before the virus took hold because everything is still intact. It all almost look brand new. It has showers, a place to sleep, an armory and even a kitchen. Now the bigger questions of today invole water and electricity. Does this building have water and a generator? Only one way to find out.
I flick the light switches on as I move in case there is and burnt light bulbs. Miraculously, there is power which also means something entirely more amazing. Hot water! After I check the generators I am going to take the longest shower of my life.
I walked out back in search for the generator and I think I found it. It's attached to the building inside what looks like a maintenence shed. I check the side and it looks like it runs on gas. There's at least enough for a month if I'm careful but definitely enough for getaway fuel. I close the doors heading back inside. I make my way to the roof in case there is more supplies or zombies.
The door makes a creaking as I carefully open it. No corpses up here but, there are solar panels. This is great! Im not relying solely on the gas to run this place. I'll still have to ration but it will last longer than I thought.
I lock up the roof and head back down. I baracade the front doors and lock the side for quick access. I take off my gear placing it in one of the bunks. All I can focus on is a hot shower and clean clothes. I wish someone told me the apocalypse was going to make the world smell.
After my shower, I look out one of the few windows to see that the sun is finally setting. I guess it's easier to appreciate something so far away, and seemingly safe, once you're safe yourself. Suppose I should try and get some sleep. Plenty of work to do tomorrow.
As I wander around shutting off all the the lights I can't help but feel a little hope.
