Chapter 3: Te North Star's Shining Light
"The 104th Cadet Corps Boot Camp starts now! Unfortunately for you, I'm your drill sergeant, Keith Shadis." A man with deep sunken eyes that seemed to stare into each and every cadet standing in front of him, stood firmly on a pedestal and introduced himself before warning us of what's to come. "I have no intention of giving you a warm welcome.Right now, you are all nothing but livestock to feed the titans. No, even less than livestock. I'm going to spend the next three years training all you worthless scum. I'll drill into you how to kill those titans. In three years, when you stand in front of a titan, whether you're still livestock, or a wall of honor that will protect the king, or if you are a titan killing soldier that will protect humanity! It's up to you to decide!"
I stood with my feet rooted into the ground under me and my arms in a tight formation, both of them behind my back. I repeated the words Maria left for me in my head, before I enrolled. She held my shoulders and stared deep inside my eyes 'You are from a farm outside Shiganshina, on the day of the incident your parents were shopping in the city and you never saw them again. If you have any problems you can use me as an excuse.'
"Hey, mop-top!" Shadis, our drill sergeant, now stood in front of someone, me being a little far back and near the end of my row, my view of them was obstructed.
"Sir!" They quickly saluted.
"What do they call you, maggot?"
"Armin Arlert, from Shiganshina, sir!"
"Wow, seriously? Why would your parents curse you with such a dumb name." Shadis berated and intimidated the young boy.
"It was my grandfather, sir!" The drill sergeant then leaned down to loom over Armin.
"Cadet Arlert! Why is a runt like you here?"
"To help humanity overcome the titans!" I could barely see the boy turn his head slightly so Shadis wouldn't be so close to his face.
"That is delightful to hear!" Shadis then stood up straight again, in perfect formation. "You're going to be a good light snack for them! Row three, about face, runt!"
Sliding between the cadets of row three, who all quickly spun around given the orders, Shadis quickly found his next victim.
"What do you call yourself?"
"Sir! My name is Thomas Wagner, I'm from the Trost District!"
"I can't hear you!"
"I'm from the Trost, sir, my name is Thomas!"
"Shut up! Nobody cares! Next!" Like a fox, he was already talking, or rather yelling, down his next target. As the other superiors sauntered around the cadets, watching and talking amongst themselves
"Is a pathetic worm like you the best Karaness has to offer?"
"Sir! I'm afraid that's the case, Sir!"
Unfortunately, I was soon glared down at like a rat out of a hell by my new drill sergeant. I was never one to sweat much but at that very moment I almost thought it was raining.
"You! What do I call you, half-pint!"
"Sir! My name is Orelia Pflanz, I'm from a farm right outside Shiganshina, inside Wall Maria!" I made sure my right fist resided over my heart and my fingers faced up, and my focus stayed forward as the man glared at me sideways, so close I could almost feel his breath.
"I didn't ask your whole life story, did I?" I tried not to flinch at my mistake as he yelled down my ear drum.
'Shit! I just repeated what Maria said cause I kept thinking about it!' I couldn't help but beat myself up inside my own head.
