My soul left my body as my racing heart dropped to my feet. I turned around to see Eddie smirking playfully. I stomped my way to him and hit his shoulder with my open hand. He flinched and attempted to cover himself from my rage.
"You. Are. An. Idiot." I continued to hit him. "You scared the shit out of me."
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry." He chuckled. "I didn't mean to scare you... Actually, I did. But I'm sorry... Stop hitting me."
"I came all the way into Mordor so you could play around with my feelings?"
"In fact, I asked you to come here so we could discuss some important issues." He said as he took a seat on the picnic table instead of the bench. I stood in front of him with my arms crossed.
"In the middle of the night. In the woods."
"I tried calling you, but Mrs. Henderson answered and told me to stay away from her family. Very rude of her. I tried your window again, but you weren't there. So, I left the note thinking you'd be home early."
"I went out with Dustin, Robin and Steve."
"Steve like as in Harrington?" He asked. I just nodded. "Isn't he kind of a douchebag?"
"Actually, he's a pretty nice guy. All that are just rumors."
"Well, he does have quite a reputation of asking an impressive number of girls out... Wait, please tell me he did not ask you out."
"No... I mean, he did. But I said no."
"What? You rejected the number one bachelor that could potentially be your high school sweetheart?" I shrugged as he let a mischievous laugh escape his lips. "If it was because of what happened yesterday, I'm here to tell you, you can date whoever you want. You can say yes to Harrington if you wish. I don't mind."
My breath was shaky, and my eyes filled with anger.
"You don't mind?! Then why the hell did you kiss me? Was it just to shut me up so I could stop annoying you?" I knew he was lying. He had to be. "Listen to me, Eddie. I did say no to Steve because of what happened. Because it did mean something to me... I know you're lying."
Eddie stared at me with an expression I was not able to read. It looked like a mixture of sadness and shame that he was trying to hide.
"I just think you'll have a better chance at life if you date him."
"Eddie, we talked about this yesterday. I don't care if you're in a band, if you like playing fantasy games, or if you're 'The Freak' of the town. In fact, I love all those things about you." I reached for his hand, and he held mine gently. "Please stop thinking that you're a terrible person. You're amazing, and everyone who surrounds you is incredibly lucky to have you in their life... I feel like the luckiest person on Earth when I'm with you."
"I'm sorry, Y/N." He said after a few moments. "I just want you to really think this through."
"What is there to think of? I like you; you like me. Everything else can go to hell."
Eddie's eyes lit up and his expression softened. His hand led mine towards his lips, which placed a gentle kiss on the back of my hand.
"I promise to be the very best version of myself for you, Princess."
"You're already the best I could ever have."
He looked down at our hands that were still holding. "I like the way you hand fits mine."
"Oh my god, Munson. Please just kiss me already."
And just as I asked, Eddie stood up from the table. The height gap between us became noticeable once more. He placed one of his hands on my waist, and with the other, he held my chin between his thumb and index finger. His rings were cold against my skin. I placed one of my hands on his arm and the other on his cheek, as I leaned connecting our lips.
This boy gave the softest and most passionate kisses in the whole word. They made this warmness inside me become a fire. His hands held me close, making me feel safe from all the dangers of the world. He felt like home.
After a few more seconds, and as much as we didn't want to, we parted. He looked deeply into my eyes, and I felt it. This was the best thing that ever happened to me. We didn't let go of each other. I wanted to be the one who made him feel like the most special person on Earth. I was going to pepper him with kisses and gifts and spoil him so bad. I wanted to keep everything about him with me.
"So," he said beaming, "does this count as our first date?"
"Of course not, Munson. We'll go somewhere special."
"Yeah? Where?"
"It'll be a surprise." I gently brushed a few hairs off his face.
"Hey, Princess?" His eyes sparkled in the moonlight. "I just want you to know... You have something in your hair. Do you want me to get it out?" He snickered.
"Oh my god, Munson." I tried to pull away trying to seem annoyed, but a clear smile grew on my face. He quickly grasped my hand and pulled me into another kiss.
Eddie accompanied me back home. He took me on his van, which he still drove like a madman. He pulled over a street away from my house and I opened the door to get out.
"Goodnight, Sweetheart." He said with a dreamy smile on his face.
"'Night, Eddie."
"Please be careful back home."
"I will."
I walked trying not to look back. I forced the smile on my face to be less noticeable, but it was in vain. I felt... no, not butterflies, I was feeling the whole freaking zoo in my stomach.
I snuck back into my room through the window. And just as I was making my way to unlock the door, the nightlight lit up. Dustin was laying on my bed with a solemn expression.
"Hi." I whispered.
"Hi. Do you know what time it is?" He asked frustrated. I didn't know what time it was. I looked at my clock. It read 11:23. "I know you were with Eddie. I saw the note. And let me tell you, you owe me a big one."
Apparently, Dustin had come to knock on my door for dinner. Since my door was locked, he checked the window and found the note. He had told his mother that I was feeling sick and that I didn't want to eat. She got worried and was going to go into my room to check on me. Dustin convinced her that it was mostly emotional, and that it was better to leave me for tonight. He had snuck into my room and waited for me to arrive.
"I do owe you a big one. Thank you, Dustin."
"You're lucky I'm a good brother." He got up from my bed and headed to the door. "You could've been caught. Was it even worth it?"
"Totally."
