One Hundred. Sophia counted as she brushed her hair on a large smooth gray rock. Playing around with her hair at the cove was one of Sophia's favorite advantages of being a mermaid. The moon shone over the ocean and Sophia's tail sparkled as the moonlight kissed her pink scales.
She loved how it felt along with the cold ocean water slapping her fluke. It was the midnight hour and Sophia happened to be the only one at the cove. She splashed her tail some more in the water while twisting the ends of her brown long hair. Her hair was covered in sea pearls and some braids of green seaweed.
The sound of the waves hitting the rock calmed Sophia as she looked up into the sky. Beautiful. She thought to be the word to describe such a night. The stars burned the night sky with such light that it made Sophia want to catch one and hold it. She took her gaze away from the twinkling lights and looked at her necklace.
It was in two pieces that connected to make a whole when put together. The necklace was the image of a full moon and would break up into a crescent moon the words I love you to the moon and back were written in the moon. Altogether, it was worn upon Sophia's neck on a silver chain. The necklace was a gift from her mother before she passed away, a few weeks ago.
Her mother was a strong and stunning siren with the most enchanting voice in all of the Seven Seas. Sophia happened to receive her mother's beautiful voice to carry on in their family. But learned that it could be supremely dangerous. That was the price her mother at least had to pay for.
Her mother, Rose, was singing on the rocks very close to the shore one evening. A couple of fishermen heard her voice and was lured toward her. She did not know they were near her since she was lost in her singing. The fishermen came around with the ship with such a speed that the ship crashed right into my mother. Her body was stabbed with the point of the ship in a blood shed.
Once Sophia's father, Anthony, got the news in a message inside the family shell phone, a conch shell, he ran away. The depression was too much for him to take in that he abandoned his only daughter. Sophia just turned fifteen at the time and was a little confused.
After a couple of days she figured that she would never see her father again, he just left and didn't leave a note or anything. She kept the conch shell her father left that had the message, announcing her mother's death, saved. At least I have my own shell phone now. But there was no one to call, she had no friends and no parents to contact.
The sun started to peek through the edges of the water over the horizon. Sophia needed to head back home, or what was at least shelter she wouldn't call it home without her loved ones being there, for mermaid school. Learning and exploring technically was considered the only reason to stay living, in Sophia's opinion.
Her classes lasted for about an hour long and there were four classes to take each day. Sophia's absolute favorite class happened be to Humans: Myths and Legends. There was so much to learn about the world above and Sophia wished that she could explore it one day. She believed that the creatures with legs and feet, called humans, were pretty interesting. But her first class for the morning was Beauty in Tails.
Her home, where she lived, was an old huge clam shell that had coral and seaweed growing on the sides. The surface of the shell inside had to be the best part of living in the shell. The clam's bottom was super comfortable it would feel like laying in a thousand rose petals. Roses were Sophia's favorite human flower especially since it reminds her of her mother and the flower was red, tending to be romantic.
Her teacher, Mrs. Scallop, showed the class the rose one day held in a glass case one day in Humans: Myths and Legends. Sophia just wanted to take the rose out of the glass container it was in and hold it close to her chest. The beauty of the flower constantly reminded Sophia of her mother and how they had similarities.
Even though it was tempting to relax and take a nap on the clam shell floor, Sophia had to arrive to class on time. She grabbed her conch shell, just in case, and her mermaid school bag. Then, turned off all the glowing starfish lights and shut the clam shell shut. Sophia always knew that her home would be safe because the clam only opened whenever one of her families blood came close to it.
After passing through a few strong ocean currents getting in the way, Sophia finally made it to her merschool. She is in the tenth fish grade at school, which meant two more years of studying until she gets a real job.
Her merschool, Triton High, looked like a golden palace that hasn't been redecorated in one hundred years. It was huge and had over two thousand classrooms so sometimes Sophia finds herself getting lost or in the wrong classroom. You could only imagine what Sophia had to go through, all of the merfolk trying to get to class at the last minute like her. Bad timing.
Sophia swam over and under the other students that got in her way trying to get to her class. She swam so fast that she thought the scales on her tail would fall off in a heartbeat. At least she got just in time before she was labeled late for Humans: Myths and Legends.
School seemed to swim by for Sophia because all day was just taking notes and reviewing new concepts. She swam home right after school ended, making no eye contact with anyone. Once she arrived to the giant clam shell, it magically opened up with just one swish of her tail. Breathe. Sophia thought to herself as she tumbled down onto the floor.
She brought her merschool bag upon her lap to begin studying her notes. Right when she was studying, Sophia felt warm heat on her chest. She looked down toward the top of her chest and it was her necklace creating the doing it. Sophia took the necklace into her hands while it still was hanging around her neck.
The moon started to sparkle and shine, glowing right in front of Sophia's eyes. What the starfish? Sophia said to herself telepathically since mermaids could not speak under water, they are used to communicating using their thoughts.
Catching Sophia off guard, the necklace began moving, taking Sophia with it all over her home trying to get out of the clam shell. Soon it had the power to burst out of the shell taking Sophia along for a wild ride.
