Reader POV (375 years ago from present day)

I was out at sunset hunting for dinner, my eyes squinting at the dying rays of the sun.

"Miss, are you sure you can be out in the sun?" My trusted assistant, grandson-in-law, and friend Kamisato Ayato asked with worry.

I gave the monsoon hashira a grin. "No worries. Oh which reminds me...how is Soma?"

He smiled. "He is fine. He was quite pleased to hear my wife is expecting."

"He was always fond of his youngest daughter," I sighed. "I remember when he had a crush on your mother-in-law. It's nice to see Soma has grown up into a wonderful man. He is going to be 40 this year."

"So hard to believe that...you know. Everything happened years ago." Ayato frowned. "Are you sure you can't come to the Kamisato palace later? I'm sure Soma would be pleased to see you."

"And have him rub in my face that I'm now a great-grandmother despite having the body of a 21-year-old? No thank you." I bumped my grandson-in-law playfully. "Besides...Yoriichi was right. He must not see me again."

"But he misses you so," Ayato's frown deepened. "Surely-"

"Ayato, I'm sure you've heard the flame pillar Rengoku Kozume tell of how Soma was almost tempted by his father to turn into a demon. He must stay human!"

"Yes...speaking of the pillars, aren't you supposed to wear the official uniform?" He looked skeptically at my current garb.

I gave the monsoon pillar a nudge. "Don't be crass. Besides you're wearing the Kamisato uniform."

"I suppose. But you never did tell me where you got it," Ayato sent a suggestive smirk.

"Oh, I knew the imperial family of China. I'm actually a descendant of a long line of monks and warriors. A little tricky business. I went back recently and received this. A little token of their imperial gratitude." I gave him a smile.

I suddenly saw a little bit of movement and shot my arrow, a goose falling out of the sky and onto the ground.

"Take that to your family, young Ayato. Tell my granddaughter that a family friend says hello."
