Andy had decided to stay up late watching movies on TV. He'd fallen asleep a while ago, but the TV was still on. His toys had taken the opportunity to have a movie night of their own. It was past ten, meaning that, so long as they kept the volume down, they could watch whatever they wanted.

"Did we have to pick this movie?" Rex whimpered, shaking all over but not looking away from the screen. A large monster was attacking the Statue of Liberty, which was odd because the movie was supposed to be set in San Francisco.

"Calm down, you big lizard," grumbled Mr. Potato Head. His wife, Mrs. Potato Head, looked at him sternly, and he quickly backtracked. "It's only a movie, nothing to be scared of."

Hamm, the piggy bank, joined in. "Yeah, it's clearly just a guy in a costume. You can see the zipper when he turns around."

Most of the toys were on the bedroom floor, watching the movie. However, the leader of the toys, Sheriff Woody, was not among them. He sat up on the bed, sometimes watching the movie but mostly staying near Andy.

Woody had been Andy's favorite toy for years, and they were never shy about how much they loved each other. The cowboy doll had been worried lately. In two weeks, Andy would be starting school again. He'd be going into the third grade, and the cowboy knew that it would be scary for him. He wanted to be with Andy as much as he could.

"You alright, Sheriff?" Woody looked up to see Buzz Lightyear, Andy's other favorite toy, walking over to sit with him. The two toys couldn't be more different in looks, skills, and often opinions. In fact, when they first met, Woody had considered them enemies for a while. But now, he considered the Space Ranger action figure his best friend.

"Fine, Buzz." Woody patted the spot on the bed next to him, and the other toy sat down. Ever since Woody had been kidnapped by the greedy toy collector and proprietor of a well-known toy store, his best friend had been a little more protective of him. Well, when he wasn't distracted by the newest doll, Jessie the Yodelin' Cowgirl.

"You're worried, aren't you?" Buzz asked, not bothering to specify further.

"A little," he admitted. "The first day of school is always hard for Andy. He gets over it quick, but...I just want to be there for him as much as I can."

"Like you always do."

Woody smiled a bit. The two didn't say anything else; they didn't need to. They began to watch the movie. The first one ended with the monster being hit with a plane, and a new one began, this one a space adventure (which piqued Buzz's interest).

One by one, the toys below drifted off. The TV continued to play for a while, before a toy truck turned it off and rolled away to sleep in the toy box. Buzz had long since passed out, and was sprawled backwards on the bed. Woody was still awake, but just barely. Which is why he heard the sound of a creaking floorboard.

He woke up immediately. He looked at the clock on Andy's wall. Midnight. No one should have been awake at that time. He knew Andy was asleep right behind him, and Molly (Andy's baby sister) wasn't old enough to get out of her crib yet. Mom worked earlier in the morning, so she wasn't awake. So...who was it?

Woody knew he had to investigate. But he couldn't do it alone. He turned to Buzz, who was still out cold, and started to shake him.

"Buzz!" He whispered.

"Godzilla's just a costume!"

The space ranger quickly sat up, spouting some nonsense from his dream. Woody shushed him, and told him what was going on. Buzz understood immediately, and backflipped off the bed. Woody, not as acrobatic, simply jumped down.

The two slowly crept out of Andy's room, stepping into the dark hallway. Buzz glowed in the dark, the green paint of his space suit giving off weak neon light. Woody realized a bit too late that this made Buzz too easy to see, but it was too late to turn back now.

As the two looked around, they realized that the hallway was empty. Not even Buster, the family dog, was up. The cowboy began to feel silly. The sound he'd heard was probably just the house settling. There was no one in the hall–

Woody yelped as he was hoisted into the air. Instinctively, he went limp, returning to the inert state he entered whenever Andy played with him or a person came into the room. He could see that Buzz had frozen as well, and had also been picked up by...by...

The cowboy realized with terror that he had no idea who (or what) had picked him up. It was as if an invisible person had snuck up and snatched him. He'd barely had time to process this when a sack had appeared out of nowhere, and the two toys were shoved inside it.
