The antelope hadn't noticed her. She had carefully picked out the spot, making sure that the wind wouldn't carry her scent and let her lunch get away. She was crouched low, carefully adjusting her position. The antelope still hadn't noticed her, and continued to drink from the watering hole. She steadied herself, getting ready to pounce...
Somewhere off to her right, a stick broke. The antelope looked up, startled, and began to walk away. Frustrated, she jumped from her spot in the grass and took off after it. The antelope, unfortunately, had been given something of a head start, and had made its escape before the lioness had made it to the watering hole.
Nala growled. She had spent over an hour tracking the antelope, and now because of one little stick she didn't have anything to eat. She took a breath, trying to calm herself.
She reminded herself that she wouldn't go hungry. Ever since Simba had returned and taken his place as king, food had been more plentiful. No one had gone hungry in months.
Upon Simba's coronation, she was made queen. Together, the two had been kind but firm leaders. Still, every now and then, she liked to go off and hunt alone. She might have been queen, but she liked to sharpen her skills. Simba, after all, had never learned to hunt; while he ate meat whenever it was offered, she'd still caught him eating bugs once or twice.
She went over to the watering hole that the antelope had abandoned, and drank. She still could barely believe how much everything had changed in just a few months. The grass had grown back, the herds had returned, and Simba had added a warthog and meerkat to his royal court (although she admitted that Timon and Pumbaa were pretty nice once you got to know them).
Another stick broke. She stopped drinking and raised her head quickly, growling. Someone was there. And it didn't smell like anyone she knew.
She stared intently at where the sound had come from. But she saw nothing. She was still on edge, but allowed herself to continue to drink.
Only a second later there was a splash. Nala jumped back from the watering hole, growling. What was going on?
She wanted to run back to Pride Rock, to tell Simba and the other lions what she'd seen. But as she began to walk away from the watering hole, she heard another stick break. She slowed, but kept walking. But now she was listening.
From behind, following her, she heard them. Footsteps. Someone, or something, was following her. She turned around, roaring to scare away her stalker. But again, she couldn't see anyone.
"Who's there?" She finally shouted.
No one responded. She didn't want to admit it, but she was frightened. If someone were just playing a trick on her, they would have revealed themselves by now.
She was about to turn and run to Pride Rock when something heavy landed on her. A device made out of ropes had been trapped her. She later learned that it was called a net. It was heavy, and while she clawed at it and roared, she couldn't get it off.
"Let me go!" She shouted at her stalker, wherever they were. "Someone help!"
If anyone was nearby, they didn't answer. She was trying not to panic, but her heart was practically bursting from her chest. What was happening?
She barely had time to think before her invisible stalker began to drag the net. She roared and growled, mostly in fear by that point, but could do nothing. She could only watch, trying not to scream, as she was dragged through a wall of light.
