My heart is pounding faster and faster. These are final cuts in basketball tryouts and I’m not sure how well I did. “Okay men, as you all know today we will be having final cuts if I don’t call your name today then we would love to see you back next year. Don’t stop trying you all have you entire sports careers ahead of you. Okay so Michael, Ethan, Joshua, Daniel, Christopher, Matthew, William, Alexander, Anthony, and Jacob. Thank you all for trying out and guys; if I called your name our first practice is tomorrow directly after girls practice so be here at 6pm, no later. Dismissed.” Wow I’m so happy this is my first time ever being on any type of sports team. This is great.
“Hey Jacob come over here” I ran up to my friend, Christopher, and obviously some of my new teammates and they were all having excited conversations then I suddenly felt someone pull on my arm.
“Hey man your one of us now. I’m Alexander but my friends call me Alex. Me and the guys are about to go out you should join us.”
“Sure man. Just let me grab my stuff.” Wow what a great day first I find out I’m on the basketball team then I get invited to hang out with some of the coolest guys in school. I run out with my bag and we all jump into either Alex or Chris’s truck and take off…………………….I’ve never been to this side of town all I see is flashing lights everywhere. “Hey where are we?”
“Welcome to Malibu my friend. It’s a lot different from the boring city of Agoura Hills. Here you can do anything. As long as you don’t get caught. Here we are.” I looked around at what appeared to be a club. “This is The Canyon. We come here because I have connections here so we don’t get carded. My girlfriend’s dad owns the place so we get in free too. Look there’s Emma. Hey Emma”
“Hey baby what’s up”
“Do you think me and the guys can get in. We came to celebrate especially since we got a brand new member of our team this year.”
“Sure thing go ahead.” I smile at her and start to walk in but I’m stopped by her hand on my chest as she pulls me by my shirt closer and whispers “congrats” in my ear. I smile and slowly walk inside not sure how I should feel about what just happened. Music’s great but there’s a bunch of random kids here that I don’t know.
“Hey man. Want some of this?” What could one drink do after all………………………. Where….am……..I? *beep* *beep* *beep* is this a hospital? “Hey guys he’s awake!” All the guys from the team rushed in looking extremely relived. They were all very happy until coach walked in.
“What were you thinking? You could’ve gotten yourself killed.”
“With all due respect sir I’m not even sure that I remember what happened so there’s no way to know what I was thinking and I was more than likely not even in my right mind.”
“I SHOULDA KNOWN THA…”
“Sir we are going to need everyone to clear out this room” Saved by the nurse.
“This isn’t over. Don’t forget about practice tonight. You better be there.”
“I’ll try my best” The nurse and I just sat there in silence while she filled out some paperwork. I was still a little dizzy form whatever it was that happened last night. What happened? How did I end up in a hospital? Why is coach so mad?
“Jacob” Ugh why do I keep feeling like someone’s calling me? “Jacob” I turn and lok to se the nurse looking at me extremely confused.
“Sorry, ummm yes?”
“I need to know what you remember from last night. We need to know what happened for our records and your parents are in the lobby and they need to know what happened too.”
“I don’t remember what happened. I had a drink or too after the guys invited me out to congratulate me on making the team and the rest is faded. Can I go home now?”
“No you can’t we need to know what happened. You need to know what happened..”
“And I’m sure Alex or Chris or someone from our team will tell me but I have things I need to do before practice tonight and so I need to go.”
“You can’t go anywhere right now. We don’t know when you will be able to leave. She stood up and went to the door. “May I have Chris and Alex in here please?” How did she know their names? Oh right I told her. “Hello boys. I need you two to tell me everything that you remember from last night.”
“Sure thing. We all got pretty hammered but it looks as if some of us can handle our alcohol better than others.” It’s so like Chris to start this whole thing off making it a joke. I have to go.
“Chris man let Alex tell us what happened”
“Ha Chris looks like you were taking too long to get to the point. And Jacob, my man, my legendary homeboy, check your pockets.” I did and I found a bunch of phone numbers, some car keys, my receipt from the club, and blood all in my pocket.
“Why am I bleeding?”
“Well you got at least 20 girls hitting on you last night and you got most of their numbers. That was impressive even I haven’t ever done that and you…..”
“But why am I bleeding”
“I’m getting to that. Don’t get your panties in a wad. Okay well anyway everywhere I looked I saw you with another girl all over you. You ended up getting most of their numbers as you can see. After you drank around 17 drinks you decided to take a lap around the block in my car. We were all drunk so we didn’t find any problem with it. I handed you the keys and you were doing great until you spun. You hit a tree man. We didn’t bother locking the car back because it was pretty messed up. You on the other hand just kind of walked it off. You were bleeding but you didn’t seem to care. That’s why you have blood on you and my keys in your pocket. And that’s practically it but we eventually called an ambulance because you lost a lot of blood and passed out. We were worried man so we called coach and explained the whole thing. He thought about kicking you off the team but them we told him we were all there. We were all drunk. And you wouldn’t have even been there if it weren’t for us. He calmed down but then he called your parents and that’s when things got bad.”
