This must be the millionth time I have tried to open that dam locket and failed to do so! The clasp still firmly attached to its other half, it's perfectly rounded, shiny, silver surface glinting at me mockingly. Not a dint in sight, despite my desperate hammering, often with multiple heavy objects. It is the one and only item I posses which ties me to my true family, my real parents, the ones I got to see for barely a few weeks in my early life before I became situated here at the Sunderfield Orphanage. You would think I would treat it with more respect, my one and only true possession and all. But 16 years worth of pent up curiosity eventually starts to get to you, there is only so long you can carry it around like it's 'your precious'.

The dinner bell chimes, its short sharp calls reverberating through the hallways, reaching into all the corners, sounding off the aged walls. With a sigh I climb to my feet, yet again cut short on my un-therapeutic smashing session. Quick to slip the cool silver back over my head, I make my way out of my dorm and towards the lunch hall.

I've been here long enough to know that the earlier you get to dinner, the more likely you are in grabbing one of the few plates of decent food. I mean it's not all bad here, the sisters running this place treat you all like family, and we have game nights and the occasional movies on the big clunky television set. I even have my own dorm, a single bed and quaint little window, but I mean it's the least I deserve after having to spend all of my childhood in this stuffy place.

Soramine (The name of my village) is conveniently placed in the middle of nowhere. The closest town being a good twenty-five miles away, the closest city being over hundreds of miles away and without many working cars in this part, the distance seems to be a lot longer. Therefore the lack of actual facilities here results in many of our needs being catered for at the orphanage itself. All our food has to be imported once a month, all the children being effectively home schooled with only one relatively decent sized library and one measly old computer to entertain the twenty or so of us here under the elderly building's roof. With us being so remote it's rare to see someone enter this place and even rarer to have someone leave it.

I, Emily Norse, am the oldest one left, 16 years and 357 days. In just over one week I turn 17 and with that I can finally leave this place, embark on my own journey away from this secluded town and finally achieve something in my life.

But that one week never actually went as planned....
