FACECLAIM nikolaj coaster-waldauPERSONALITY although his initial attitude doesn't reveal much, edgar is quite an angry person. he's mad at the world, mad at his childhood, mad at God, mad at himself. he lives in his thoughts more than he lives in reality, and those thoughts are relentless. there's the thoughts, and then there's the urges. oh, you're mad? drink. sad? drink. it's your fault, isn't it? drink. despite his own troubles, the weight of the world still sits on his shoulders, and he often feels guilty and responsible for things—even if they are out of his control. ed used to be idealistic, but has since abandoned that way of thinking.
he has, however, kept his empathy. his empathy, it seems, he can never get rid of. empathy and wanting to help people is what drove him to religion in the first place when he was a kid. he has always had a knack for listening, understanding, and giving people hope. more than likely, he's not going to give anyone that privilege anymore, but maybe, just maybe, he could to do so again. he still has sense of purpose for his life—however hidden, or long tucked away. ed is turbulent, in more ways than one, but keeps a good conscience about him—and more importantly, a good heart.
LIKES coffee (two cream, two sugar), books and reading, bob dylan, chess, daydreaming.
DISLIKES bullies, ignorance, swearing (it's hilarious, really).
STRENGTHS physically strong, knowledgable (especially about myths, histories, and philosophies), self-sufficient, pretty good with blunt weapons.
WEAKNESSES emotionally isolated, self-critical, a recovering alcoholic, lacking faith.
WEAPONS he carries a handgun on his waist. other than that and occasionally his fists, he doesn't have many weapons. he does, however, use everything and anything around him at his disposal, such as blunt weapons. there was that one time, when the outbreak first started, he threw a dining chair at a zombie and gouged out its eyes with a spoon.BACKSTORY edgar grew up in a small town in new york state, in a—weirdly enough—not-so-religious home. his father was an abusive alcoholic, and his mother did the best she could with raising him. he had been a skinny kid, bullied by the other kids in town. every so often, he would go to church with his maternal grandmother, where he met father thomas, who would turn out to be the only father figure edgar could count on. as soon as he turned eighteen, he stood up to his father since he was stronger, and told him that if he ever laid a hand on his mother again that he'd come back for him, then left. he became an episcopal priest, following in the footsteps of father thomas.
when he was thirty-five, edgar got married to katie foster. but, unfortunately, only four years ago, ed's wife died in a car accident. it had been a few days before christmas, she was driving home one night when it was coming a snow storm. she lost control of the vehicle, they had told him. it was an accident. feeling mournful, angry, and rather cheated, edgar turned blasphemous. he started drinking, despite the fact he swore to himself that he never would. about a month later, after showing up one sunday morning drunk out of his right mind, father thomas tossed him out of the congregation, telling edgar he could return once he'd "come back to himself." he never went back to the church.
edgar was in a dark place for about a year after that. his house was foreclosed, he took a room at a local motel, continued to drink. the alcohol took care of the pain for a little bit, but eventually it would also stir up memories of his father that he had tucked away ages ago. he bought a gun, and would sit on the end of the bed some nights and think about it. really think about it. but, after all that time and all that thinking, he ended up on father thomas' doorstep, and talked with him instead. he started going to AA meetings, and sobered up. instead of drinking, he found another outlet for his rage and grief: physical exercise. he quickly found that running wasn't for him, but he liked boxing. he had tried faith and prayer, and found it to be useless. ed's been sober for three years and counting.
he no longer considers himself worthy of his "father" title. hasn't for a while.
