'Oak shut up its too fucking early for this' Olivia groaned, picking her orange tabby cat off of her stomach. She looked at her phone, it read 5:34am. 'Oh whatever, I've gotta wake up in an hour and a half anyways.' She sat up and rubbed her eyes before yawning and reluctantly leaving the warmth of her bed, sliding her slippers on so as to not freeze her feet off on the hardwood floor of her small studio apartment.
She wandered into the kitchen, setting the kettle to boil, her eyes drifted to the window and she saw small white flakes falling from the sky. 'Fuck, its gonna be cold at work today' she muttered under her breath. Olivia didn't mind where she worked, sure her manager was a dick most of the time but that just seemed to be a running theme with people in her experience. She was just happy to have a roof over her head and a job to keep her going, and of course she was happy to have her little ginger loaf Oak. Her small studio was adorned with Plants she had rescued and paintings she had spent hours creating. Bricks lined every corner of it which she liked and there were windows everywhere, letting in beams of sunlight but they were also perfect for when it was raining or if she couldn't sleep at night. The view wasn't too bad either and it was fairly quiet considering that downstairs there was a little café, populated by young adults and teens.
The kettle came to a boil and she poured it into a travel cup, ready for her painstakingly long day at work. She threw together a small lunch, consisting of a sandwich and an apple. She went to her room and threw on a couple layers of clothes to try and conserve what little heat her body could create. Olivia had a fairly skinny frame, slightly resembling a dear. Her skin was pale, and she had long red hair, long enough for her to sit on so she rarely wore it down for convenience sake. She liked the winter and autumn, it meant she could cover up, people wouldn't ask questions and she could just get on with her life. While trying to kill some time before leaving she walked over to a wilting plant, she closed her eyes and when she re opened them, her eyes were no longer her normal light blue colour, but replaced by a glowing, deep ocean blue colour. She hovered her hand over the plant and whispered 'Abracadabra' with a chuckle knowing the word meant nothing. With that she sat by the window and read for a bit, her eyes returning to normal.
She packed her bag up for work, opened her front door and shut it behind her after saying goodbye to Oak. She looked at her phone 'SHIT! I'm gonna be late to work again!' She had been sitting reading for longer than intended, this was the second time this week and it was only Wednesday. She always gets lost in her books, she had ever since she was a child. The laundrette she worked at was 4 blocks away and she only had 10 minutes to get there. With that thought she tightened the ponytail on her head and set off running. Despite her efforts to get to work on time she was still late. 'Marvin I can explain' she said panting,
'No Olivia! I told you-'
'I know what you told me! But please, I need this job! I have nothing else!' she exclaimed, tears welling up in her eyes knowing how the outcome of this would be.
'I'm sorry Olivia but I need someone more reliable. Go home, I'll send your check out tomorrow morning.'
'It's uh- it's fine, I understand,' she said stifling over her words, smiling, attempting not to let the floodgates in her eyes open. She turned away from Marvin walking out the door, the doorbell chiming as it opened. It made her kinda sad that that would be the last time she heard that bell chime. She looked around the cityscape of NewYork and decided to walk back to the little café under her apartment, holding up the barrier keeping the tears from falling.
