Chapter One
Nicole - Sometime in the near future
~
*Sighs* Today's gonna be a long day... I sat in a chair in my Dad's office, my ipod earbuds blaring. The clock seemed to be ticking every so slowly, I stared at it intensely, willing it to go faster.
Okay, speed up...now!
...okay now!!
...
how bout now?
...
Natta. Oh well, Dad promised he wouldn't be too much longer. After his meeting he said he would show me around the lab, not that I expected that to be any less boring, but hey, atleast my butt wouldn't be numb.
I remember this morning how enthusiastic he was about take your kid to work day, he told me about a bunch of different lasers he'd been working on, his latest theories about possible subatomic combustion and transition of molecules... blah blah blah... something about the fabric of space, then a bunch of big sciencey words that I had no hopes of understanding. I love my Dad, really I do, I just wish his job were a little more exciting!
Out of boredom I flipped through the photo's on my ipod, untill I reached a certain one, and stopped to stare. It was a picture of me, my long brown hair was pulled up and curled, something I hardly ever did. I wore a short beige dress and my eyes glinted almost as if I were holding a secret. I smiled shyly at the boy with black hair and tan skin that had his arms wrapped around me. He too, was smiling and looking at me, like we were the only two people in the world.
Josh.
*sigh* Why wasn't I enough for you?
Just then the door opened, and I hastily turned my ipod off. Dad walked through the door, looking puzzled and slightly uneasy.
"Hey hon, sorry that took so long, thanks for being so patient. I was just...um... we're,uh... having some slight problems with the security camera's so everyones in a big fuss trying to figure it out..."
"No it's okay Dad, really, I mean... if you wanna go back and help, I don't mind waiting a little bit longer..." Lies. Get me outta here now!!!
He turned and gave me a warm smile
"I think my team can spare me for a few moment to show my wonderful daughter around the lab. It's probably just a mis-crossed wire or two. Nothing too exciting."
His eyes twinkled. My Dad was the best, always putting our needs before his own. He was the one who understood me the most in our family.
"Come on. Grab your stuff and follow me."
I smiled back and slid everything into my backpack. Ipod, sketch book, history homework... bleh. Then I followed him out the door and into the hallway. As we walked, I traced my hand along the stark white walls. *sighs* that's me, always needing something to lean on.
Soon after many twists and turns we reached a single black door. It had huge iron bolts along both sides, with a key pad and thumb scanner included.
Coooool. I thought. It's like mission impossible.
As Dad entered the code I began to sing the theme song in my head.
Bum bum, ba da da, dum dum, ba da da, bum bum, ba da da.... DADADUMMMM!!!!!
I'm such a nerd. Anyways.
The door clicked and slid open, we both walked in and I was actually amazed at what I saw.
