Jen's pencil case spilled out onto her desk and floor as she sat down, as it always did. She ducked under her desk to retrieve a hello Kitty Eraser when a large hand reached it before her.
"Hey!" A deep voice greeted. Jen jumped and hit her head on the desk, bumping more pencils to the floor.
"Whoa! Are you OK!?"
Jen sat up rubbing her head and found herself squinting up at one of the schools most attractive, charismatic, and popular guys. He was looking her full in the eye, a look of concern and a hint of amusement as if they were old friends.
"Uhh, yeah I'm OK." Jen managed nervously as he picked up the rest of her pencils. He was very tall,
with features some of the girls compared to Chris Hemsworth. Jen hadn't a clue why he was talking to her.
"I want you to know I blame you for hours of my life I can't get back." He said with an easy smile and sat down next to her.
From the corner of her eye, Jen noticed some girls watching them enviously.
"Why, what did I do?" Jen asked.
"I binge watched that show you told me about!"
"Oh, right," Jen laughed nervously, "that show!" she then proceeded to ransack her brain for a time when they had ever talked, or even what his name was, but she came up with nothing. All the while he talked about some show she had apparently recommended.
"Sorry," She interrupted, "what's your name again?"
He froze looking at her, then laughed uncertainly, "What?"
Jen laughed too, trying to recover, "I'm joking, that was a joke! I'm hilarious."
"Good morning, yes it's Friday, but we will still be doing work." The teacher spoke above the noise of the class.
"Oh, thank God!" Jen broke off her fake laughter and sunk into her chair.
"I forgot to give you this yesterday." Her unexpected desk mate whispered.
Jen peeked at him. He held out a key chain, on one side it was clear resin with a pink jellyfish floating as though in water, while on the back was the logo for Ripley's aquarium.
"OHH!" Jen exclaimed with sudden realization, "from yesterday! That explains things!"
Her desk mate stared at her in confusion as she took the key chain and waved it about for a moment.
"Are you ready, Jen?" the teacher asked with raised brows.
Jen gave the keychain one last wave, "Yes, I believe I am!" the classed laughed quietly but her desk mate could only stare at her.
Lunch hour couldn't come soon enough, as soon as Jen could get alone, she called Chrissy. "Pick up, pick up, pick up!"
"JEN!" Chrissy's voice greeted her urgently, "what on earth did you do yesterday!?"
"What did I do? What did you do!?" Jen shot back, "I've got Mr. Hotstuff talking to me like we're old friends! ME! Little old invisible me, talking to Sir Chiselled Chin! He's never even looked at me before today!"
"Hudson talked to you!?" Chrissy asked, clearly distracted, "What... what did he say- what did you say?"
"He said something about a show you made him binge, oh and he gave me a keychain."
"A keychain, really?"
Jen could practically hear her friend blush. "Yeah, he's into you, and it's weird cuz he's into me... but really, it's you he's into."
"Stop saying 'into'! Are you sure he doesn't think, you know..."
"That he actually spent yesterday with a girl named Chrissy and not me? No, I don't think he sus." Jen assured.
"Good, because Tom has no idea he invited me and not you to a concert his band is opening for tomorrow night."
Jen's phone slipped in and nearly fell, "Their band got the gig!? That's amazing!"
"Again good, cuz I said I would go- so you should go."
Jen laughed at the ridiculousness of the situation.
"Don't laugh!" Chrissy ordered, "I've got Tom trying to get me to sing about pina coladas! Also I have like a thousand photos of you two on my phone!"
"Oh yeah!" Jen remembered the many selfies she had taken, "Could you send me the good ones?"
"I didn't even know Tom had teeth." Chrissy muttered.
"What?!"
"He's smiling in almost every picture! I've never seen him smile!"
"Do you think he likes me?" Jen asked vulnerable.
"No, he thinks he likes me! and that's a problem!"
"Yeah eh? This is kinda messed up." Jen murmured, remembering Tom's thick eye lashes.
"Hey Jen!" a voice called.
Jen looked up from her phone to see Hudson approaching, "Um, are you busy tomorrow night?" he asked watching her uncertainly.
Jen glanced at her phone remembering Tom's concert. "No."
"It's just that, my sister is throwing a party- and she always makes me hang out with her friends, and it would be a million times better if you... were there." Hudson explained.
From her phone Jen could hear Chrissy's muffled gasp. Jen grinned, "Yeah, I'll be there!"
