Juliet, I saw her that night,
Beautiful as she had been in the morning sun,
Juliet, angelic undet the moonlight,
Waiting patiently for her love where prying eyes could not see,
Long ago, when love meant death,
Upheld by customs of old, tradition in the strictest form,
Though by her side, to follow such ways, I had left,
My eyes lingered a moment, dangerously, as did hers,
Until, in the oppressive light of day, I had forced myself to take my leave,
Until I could hold and kiss her as lovers do,
In the secret shadows, our tapestry of fate we could weave,
Even when she married some well to-do, a brother I had little fondness for,
I still found time to travel to that secret spot away from the world,
And she'd meet me there and dance under moonlight,
As pretty as a picture and so much more precious, than either gold or pearl,
Until the next time, until our dying days, we'll meet in the shadows and live for all eternity,
And live on for centuries to come, as lovers continue to do as we had,
Even, like a reflex, out of habit, in the age of progress and modernity,
They always feel most free in the shadows.
