Chapter one

As far as popular girls go, I'm not one of them. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a complete nerd, I'm just a bit shy you could say. It's always been one of my negative traits, so people say. I thought being shy came across as being slightly mysterious, sort of like a walking enigma that people desired to know more about however, most people just consider it to be rude. I guess you can't have everything.

Right now its the last day of the summer holidays before we go back to school and I'm not looking forward to it. How very stereotypical of me to say, but I just don't particularly like school, at least not my school. My school is full of horny, self obsessed jocks and preppy wannabe girls, just like every other school you might say but I consider it worse. Every year the guys get friskier and the girls get even more desperate, I, personally, just feel a little embarrassed for them; how lonely must your life be to crave that much sex and attention? But besides that, my school isn't too bad, maybe I overreacted.

Monday, 06:23am

I've always been an early bird, there's something so relaxing and peaceful about really taking time to perfect yourself, inside and out. Don't get me wrong, I'm mega tired but that doesn't stop me stumbling out of bed to get into the shower. I consider showering in the morning to be a fresh start, no matter what you did the night before or who you pissed off, if you shower, you wash all that negativity away allowing a fresh and cleaner start. Smart right? Before you ask, no I haven't done anything worth regretting or pissed anyone off, I'm just not a dirty cow and I actually put in the effort to go to school smelling clean unlike some people who decide its a good idea to rock up smelling like the inside of a sock, ew.

Anyway, after my shower I head downstairs to make myself a cup of tea. Did I forget to mention, I'm a 16 year old British schoolgirl living in Chicago, America. My parents died when I was 2 years old and I had no family to look after me back in my home in England so I was forced to move to live with my aunt in America. I guess I can't complain too much considering I was far too young to remember England but, I would like to have known something about my life back there and my parents, still 14 years later, I don't know what happened to them. Anyway, drinking a classic British tea is a way of remembering my parents and my heritage, even if everyone acts as though it doesn't exist.

When I finished getting ready and brushed my teeth, I sent a text to my two best friends letting them know I was on my way. We've made it tradition to go out for breakfast at our favourite café down 26th street before we head to school every Monday, this acts as a way of catching up about everything that happened over the weekend, even though we spend most huddled in Heidi's bed like sardines watching re runs of Gossip Girl.
Heidi is the richest of our trio and boy is it noticeable. Her blonde wavy hair and fresh manicured nails just give off wealth, even if she claims nobody knows she's rich. Let's not forget the designer bag that's constantly hanging off her right shoulder, totally obvious.

Then there's Flo, my other best friend. She's the fashionista of us three, her outfits are always immaculate and she will most definitely tell you if yours aren't. She has mid length, curly ginger hair and the prettiest green eyes. She is quite literally model material and she knows.

I always feel less pretty when I'm with them, I mean they tell me all the time that I look beautiful or pretty or cutesy as Heidi says but I can't help feeling like the plus one. My life just isn't like theirs, they're both so happy all the time and I am too sometimes but I just feel like deep down I don't belong around here. They don't know I feel this way, which is probably for the better.

I don't know why I got chosen to do the school runs it for some reason I'm the dedicated driver, I suppose it's for the better considering Heidi is the worst driver to ever sit in the drivers seat of any car and Flo spends more time looking in the mirror at her appearance than actually on the road. I grabbed the keys for my white ford and headed out the door, not before saying goodbye to my golden, Ollie. My aunt doesn't earn the most money so this car was just a hand me down but I still love her, she's been extremely reliable to me. I like to think we have some sort of alliance, if she doesn't break down, I wont crash her. Works a charm.

We made it to the café twenty minutes earlier than usual and sat in our usual booth in the far right corner. We dedicated this booth our sacred zone when we first became friends and it has kind of stuck ever since, even the manager Noah recognises us, he's run the place for 25 years and he's such a sweetheart; this place is his pride and joy.

"The usual girls?" Noah asked, strolling over to the booth with his usual joyous grin.
'You know it!" Heidi replied. For as long as I can remember, we have ordered the exact same three dishes: chocolate chip pancakes for Heidi, blueberry waffles for Flo and my favourite, a breakfast bagel. Noah puts a little more TLC into my bagel than the rest and let me tell you, its legendary.

"Did you hear about the party on Friday?" Flo mumbles with a mouthful of waffles, "what party?" I looked up from my bagel curiously.

"Only the hottest party of the year! Jeez Syd get the memo." Heidi squealed. "Sorry Heidi but I have no idea what you're on abo-" Then it hit me, every year on the first week back Levi St. James throws the biggest birthday party known to man. I guess it's his way of flexing his huge house and drinking too much to handle but everyone goes and when I say everyone I mean everyone. "Levi's?" I asked hesitantly, "ugh finally, I though id have to do mouth to mouth or something" I stopped chewing, "you don't have to do mouth to mouth when someone zones out babe." Flo spoke up. "oh." She carried on eating her pancakes. Heidi has always been a little slower than the rest of us.

"What makes this party so special anyway? He throws one every year." Heidi squirmed in her seat, "its invite only." I choked on my drink, both girls looked at me questioningly, "What do you mean its invite only," Flo shook her head confused, "He always goes all out and invites everyone."

"Not this year," Heidi said, finishing her plate, "Coop told me he got sick of a load of random crackheads turning up and wrecking his place so he's only letting people in with an invite or something." Coop or Cooper, is Heidi's boyfriend, he's the captain of the football team and only the most popular Junior in our year; I still have no idea how Heidi pulled him. "I'm going as Coops plus's one but I've already spoken to Levi and he wont allow more than one plus one per invite, sorry." Fuck.

Nobody knows this but I've had the biggest, fattest, most humongous crush on Levi St James for as far back as I can remember but truthfully, I have no idea why. We've never even spoken before and the only chance I've ever had to actually speak to him was at his birthday parties, even then I was too shy to say hi. Curse my shyness. But now that's ruined and I literally have no chance of getting an invite now.

"I'm sure Hudson will let me be his plus one if I ask nicely." Flo spoke up from next to me. Her and Hudson have had a thing for each other for like the past year but neither dare to explore more than just friendship. That just left me, how on earth am I meant to get into that party.

"I'm sorry Syd, I'm sure we'll get you an invite." Heidi said trying to be reassuring, "Maybe I don't need an invite," I smiled over at the other two, they both looked up at me curiously, "I mean, I'm sure he has more than one door, i'll just need your guys help opening it."

"Now that's my kinda plan'" Flo agreed. "This is going to be so much fun!" Heidi giggled.
