12. High Heels are Evil

Lisa climbed into my window first. Charlie knocked on my door second. Bobby went through the garage last. Mom moved her car and dad's car and parked them on the street so we could practice in the garage. I wasn't showing Charlie my attic just yet. Bobby wouldn't even let his sneaker touch the stairs.

Charlie and I were practicing until Bobby asked me where he could get some water. I took him inside and promised everyone else that we would bring some water for them too. While we were grabbing the bottles out of the fridge, Bobby said something I was waiting for all evening.

"I talked to Charlie and asked what he thought about you, and you won't believe what he said."

"What?" I asked anxiously, taking a sip of my water.

He leaned on the kitchen counter. "He thinks you're smart, cool, just like him, and, I quote, "She's really pretty." Bobby said, rolling his eyes. He didn't mean that.

"Really?" I asked, almost spitting my water out. "Can you tell him I think he's cool? And also, Lisa can't stop talking about you." I told Bobby.

"Really? Oh, and no problem. Let's help each other out. You helped me with Lisa, so I'll help you with Charlie." Bobby said.

"Sounds like a plan." I agreed.

We grabbed the waters off the counter and went into the garage. Charlie and Lisa were taking a break laughing. I gave them their waters and we sat down and drank our water. Mom was in her room, watching a soap opera, and dad was in his office grading some essays. We were totally free.

Everything was going well until I saw Lisa's face. It was that stare that I knew, and it was so familiar. I looked in the direction she was looking in. There he was, the man. This time, he was holding a package that had the name Josie on it.

I had to act fast. Bobby and Charlie couldn't know what was happening. Charlie can't know my past, specifically, me driving my dad's car in the middle of the night crashing into a tree yelling like a hooligan.

No, nobody could know about that.

I excused myself from the dance routine and went across the street in my high heels. That was my first mistake. I stepped incorrectly and fell to the ground. The man took a look at my face and started walking away, with my package. I couldn't let this happen.

Charlie was already running towards me, along with Bobby. Lisa was still in her trance. I took off with my bloody knee.

"Carly, please stop!" Charlie yelled.

"I need to catch that man!" I yelled.

Bobby ran after the man while I collapsed on the ground, sobbing. Bobby might not make it, or the man might hurt him. Suddenly, I felt tired. I fell to the ground and sobbed after failing to get up. Charlie sat on the ground, looking at my knee.

"Why isn't Lisa helping?" Charlie asked.

"I'll have to tell you later Charlie. Things have been going on here that aren't right, and everyone in Preston Greens is in danger." I said dramatically.

Charlie looked worried. Bobby was running down the street with a package in his hand. He was running not because of victory, but because something was chasing him, and it wasn't just one man, but a whole army.

If I just hadn't worn those high heels, I would've finished the whole army already. Why did this have to happen?

Charlie grabbed my arm and we ran toward the house. My body felt heavy and I was limping. Charlie pulled me as I struggled to tag along. Lisa was still in her trance, so there was nothing we could do about it. Bobby soon caught up to us. We ran into the garage and closed the garage door. The army was coming closer to our house. We ran inside, leaving Lisa behind in the garage.

I barged into mom's room with Charlie and Bobby. I guess she was done with her soap opera, because we caught her clipping her toenails.

"MOM!" I screamed.

Mom looked up at me with alarm. "What is it? I'm right here, what is it?" She said.

Mom was very annoyed, but I had a good reason. Charlie was scoping out the place while Bobby was commenting on the curtains. Bobby, Charlie, and I told mom the story. She didn't let us finish. She stormed out of the door with dad just in time to see the army hit the garage. Mom commanded us to hide in the attic and not to look out the window. She and dad grabbed sixteen knives each in different sizes, and I gave them a shower curtain rod for good measure.

Bobby, me, and Charlie tried to get Lisa up the stairs, but she didn't budge. We ran up the stairs, and this time Bobby didn't complain. We hid in a corner and closed the curtains to the window. We put a chair up against the window in case they shot at the window. I turned on a small lamp and grabbed some books from the shelf.

I grabbed the Bible because I was in the mood for that piece of literature at the moment. I prayed, and everyone else in the room did the same for the same people: mom, dad, and Lisa.

After we finished our prayers, Bobby was demanding answers. Charlie was putting Neosporin on my knee and wrapped bandage around it. I could tell he was listening. I noticed how gentle he was with me. His mom is a nurse, so he knows how to help my leg, but I couldn't not notice his caring nature.

"I know you're famous, but I always wondered why." Bobby said.

"Okay, okay, I'll tell you guys." I said, grunting. Charlie had his hand on my leg, holding the bandage in place. I made sure to get comfortable, because this was going to be a long story.
