Astrid Claire

Astrid was sitting on the floor of the tunnel, facing toward the barred window, tapping her nails against the poles. Alex left hours ago. She was stuck by herself for hours. She'd just been sitting there, staring, thinking. She was thinking of Alex's story. It all fit. How he came to be a heretic, his family life, everything. But one thing she still didn't understand was why exactly he wanted to turn her in particular. She understood that she was also a Claire siphon witch but it didn't clear up why he was chasing after her for weeks when there were lots of others he could have been chasing instead.

Could it be something to do with her power and where it comes from? He mentioned how the first generation of each Claire family was supposed to be regent of the French Quarter coven which was her. Maybe that was it? Maybe...

'Could you please stop that incessant tapping?' Astrid turned around and saw Lucas sitting at the top of the stairs. She didn't even realise he was there. She turned back round, tapping her fingers against the poles once more.

'I brought you some food.' He threw a bag of takeout food. It landed beside Astrid. 'Thought you might be hungry.' She stared at it then turned back, ignoring the bag of food and Lucas. 'I guess not.' He uttered.

No one said anything for a little bit.

'I don't get it.' Astrid finally broke the silence while continuing to face away from Lucas. Then she turned to face him. 'Why would you want to become a vampire?'

He shook his head. 'No. You don't get it.' He paused. 'Do you know what it feels like to be the disappointment of the family? To have them give up on you just because of one minor flaw that isn't even your fault. Something you couldn't control.' He rubbed his face. 'So, when the opportunity for me to have my own magic came up, I jumped on it.'

Astrid turned her whole body around. Leaned her back against the wall and huddled her knees into her chest and wrapped her arms around. 'Even if it meant becoming a blood-sucker?'

'I did what I had to do.'

Astrid looked down. Silence broke out. 'Can I ask you a question?' He nodded. 'You seem to be the most... stable heretic out of them all.'

He grinned, 'you're not wrong.'

Astrid glanced away. 'So, why are you doing this?' She met his eyes once more. He sat up straighter, wrapping his hands around his knees. 'Are you really gonna sit there and tell me you're okay with Alex killing an innocent teenage girl?'

'I'll do anything to help me master.'

'Why?'

Lucas looked down. He didn't say anything for a minute. Then he looked up. 'Because I love him. And I will do everything in my power to make sure he gets what he deserves.'

'And what is that?'

He leaned forward, cupping his hand on his knees. 'Power. The chance to finally live the legacy he was born to lead; to rule as regent for the French Quarter cover.'

'By turning innocent people?'

He scoffed, folding his arms over his chest. 'No one is innocent.'

'So that justifies his actions?'

Lucas scoffed and looked away. He stood up. 'Kinsley was right about you, little girl.' He said walking down the stairs and pointing at her. 'You're weak. Pathetic. Naïve.' He crouched down in front of her. 'You think you're tough. You think there's going to be some magical escape for you but you're wrong. You're as stupid as you are pathetic.'
