⚊ chapter one

One year later in May...

Fever dream high in the quiet of the night
You know that I caught it (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it)
Bad, bad boy, shiny toy with a price
You know that I bought it (Oh yeah, you're right, I want it)

I laughed softly at Ryujin and Yuna while they screeched out T-Swift at the top of their lungs. Instead of joining in, I tapped my fingers in the dashboard while in the driver's seat, Lia drive on the highway heading for home.

As I looked in the rearview mirror, I could see my cheeks were flushed from the cold air entering through the opened window.

We just came from our summer camp, Lia suggested to give us a ride in her Chevrollete Corvette, a convertible pink car. More than a few heads from other car in the road turned to check out the loud commotion.

Killing me slow, out the window
I'm always waiting for you to be waiting below
Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes
What doesn't kill me makes me want you more

I ducked my head in slight embarassment but I still smile at my friends. Even if Yeji were now joining them in the back at singing from the top of her lungs. Chaeryeong were still pretty much shy to be loud in the public, but she was smiling and laughing at them nonetheless.

They were a bit crazy together pretty much often, but that's why I love them.

And it's new, the shape of your body
It's blue, the feeling I've got
And it's ooh, whoa oh
It's a cruel summer
It's cool, that's what I tell 'em
No rules in breakable heaven
But ooh, whoa oh
It's a cruel summer
With you

Well, that and the fact they treated me like theirs even if I'm a little too shy at times. They were perfectly content to let me sit back pretending I didn't know them every time they were causing too much of a scene.

A small pang of sadness filled my heart as they drove me home.

The summer is ending, everything is about to change or will be back to normal. For one year now, I had leant on this five girls more than I probably should have. Despite all of my dreams in flourishing to be a social butterfly this year, it never really happened.

I just never felt like I could break out of my shy shell.

If it weren't for this girls, I will still be an awkward little duckling without friends.

"Okay, you all both need to stop singing or we'll be pulled over", Lia threatened to the girls, looking embarassed now.

"Yeah, yeah, since when my charm hasn't worked on any police officer?", Ryujin quipped back.

"It doesn't matter now that we're here in Sunhee's house", Lia reminded as she turned off the stereo and parked the car in front of my brother's.

I hadn't seen it in the one month I stayed in the summer camp and the sight of the other cars in the long driveway wasn't too much of a reassurance on my way out of Lia's corvette.

Streamers peaked through the windows as we walked up the long walk way up to the porch and I nearly cringed. Mom is going all out for my simple arrival from a vacation.

"Mama Kim, we're home!", Yuna shouted the second we were through the front door.

"Nope! Only my sister is welcome here, you can go back to your car!", Sunoo shouted back from the kitchen.

My mom's voice drifted from the living room, "Don't listen to the grumpy kid, girls! You're always welcome here!"

It was immediately followed by a series of laughters, all from males, making my heart drop. As I rounded the corner and saw at least five familiar boys with her, my heart sunk a little more.
