South gazed absently at the ceiling of his apartment room.
The sun hung low above the horizon against the overcast sky, giving his bedroom a gloomy lighting. The country lazily turned his head to shift his gaze to the sky, clouds streaked with shades of slate grey and pale blue, neutralizing the purples, orange and pinks of the early sunset.
Time crawled by, and with it, South's mind. How did things come to this? His brother was on the other end of the peninsula, their home, and yet it's like they've locked themselves in their own rooms, isolated from each other. They didn't choose to be separated. Did they choose to stay that way? At this point, he couldn't tell anymore. He wish he knew for sure that neither of them did. But his brother was not here for him to ask, instead kilometers away from him, probably writing away in his office. Did North think of him? He probably did, but he couldn't help but wish he were thinking of him now, like he was doing.
His heart ached, desperation blooming in his chest as he yearned for his brother.
'I miss you.'
The doorbell rang and he jolted upright, pulled back to surface of the seemingly bottomless pool in his mind. He hastily shoved his phone into his pocket and fixed his bedsheets before turning a on a lamp as he strided towards the door.
Y/n greeted him with a warm smile as he swung the door open, a plastic bag in one of her hands. Her eyes were soft as she whispered a small "hey". Despite the warmth they brought, South didn't like when she looked at him that way, which was most of the time. For as long as he remembered, she always looked at him that way, like a mother anxiously worrying her child might hurt himself at the playground. He could handle himself, he wasn't a child. Not anymore.
Her gaze softened further and her eyebrows furrowed as she flitted her eyes across the room, fixing them on the single lamp that illuminated the room with a warm glow, contrasting the gloomy blue the light from outside had painted the room in.
South sighed as he caught her gaze. The smell of soup was already lingering in the air as he gestured towards the table. Y/n wordlessly gave him a look, but sat down nonetheless, taking the container of soup out of the plastic bag while South pulled bowls and utensils out of the cabinets above the kitchen counter.
"Chopsticks?"
"Yeah."
The two ate in silence, unable to find any reason to speak up. South skirted his eyes away from y/n. The girl pouted, resting her head on her palm, refusing to avert her gaze.
"What's wrong? Feeling worse than usual?"
"I don't feel..anything. I don't know, I guess I just drowned in my thoughts for a bit."
"You do know this isn't what weekends are for, right? Wanna go for a walk?"
South gazed out the sliding door by his bed, eyes fixed on the view beyond the balcony it led to.
"Mmmmm, I don't really feel like it."
"Come on? Just a quick walk, we can buy some sotteok sotteok afterwards, my treat."
A spark brought the color back into South's eyes, shining in the light as they widened.
"Nonono, I can pay for myself."
"Come on then, let's finish up."
South glided smoothly across the floor, quickly losing the sluggish demeanor he had before their meal. The two cleaned up and raced towards the door for their shoes in an almost childish haste before bursting out into the hallway, giggling as they sprinted down it.
