Chapter 1:
Lucy
I pace the corridor of the school, outside the locker area. Our usual meeting place. I look at my watch, agitated, he's late. Watches are the only piece of jewellery aloud in my faction, and of course; only for practical purposes. I always start to worry when he is late- the dauntless get around in the most curious way. They use the trains that parole the city, jumping in and out of them at top speeds; it makes my heart skip a beat. I want to shout at them for being so careless, but their ways are much different to mine. I look at the window, searching for the train that delivers them to and from school.
I see his reflection in the window before I hear him. I turn around and smile, he is so close I can see the small freckles on his long nose, I can see every individual strand of dark brown hair that lies on a mass of lose curls on his head; and best of all, I can see every individual detail and those bright blue irises that dominate his olive shaded face.
I glance up the hallway- empty. I have to be careful before showing any human contact, aware that someone may see it. It will cause shame to me and my family, not living by the rules of my faction. But as long as I'm careful. Besides, at school is the only time I see him, since I don't know where the Dauntless headquarters is, and even if I did, it's forbidden to go there.
The bell goes and he gives me a light kiss on my forehead- it makes my skin electric with pleasure.
"Hurry along," he whispers when someone appears at the end of the hallway "wouldn't want to make you late for your lesson."
I stifle a laugh. "Oh Alex," I give him a slight shake of my head, he raises a corner of his mouth in a smirk. It makes my heart flutter. "We have the same lesson, Faction History."
He gives a small light hearted laugh, more like a chuckle. He looks at his feet. "Oh, yeah." I smile and start walking, he follows a few steps after me. I turn around and give him a discreet smile, almost invisible, but he sees it. He always does.
I look ahead just as a boisterous Erudite boy crashes into me. I fall to the floor, and land in a pile of grey clothes. Being in Abnegation also submits you to a life of discrimination, the other factions tend to look down on you.
I then hear Alex shouting at the boy behind me.
"Watch where your going," He snarls, "I never knew that your faction actually needs those stupid glasses that you insist on wearing, but maybe you should get a stronger pair."
I scramble to my feet and assess the situation. Alex looks so looming there, with his dark clothes, which is not helped by the fact that he is at least a foot taller then the Erudite boy, who looks like he is about to faint with terror. I decide to interrupt before matters get out of hand.
I touch Alex's shoulder lightly, but then I remember that we are in public, and a few onlookers have collected around the scene, my hand returns to my side.
"No, it's fine." I say, Alex turns to look at me, his eyes raging, the blue dancing in them, I try not to look at them too much, or I would become to engrossed to address the situation in front of me.
"I'm sure it was just an accident, and this young man was just in a hurry to get to his next lesson, as you should be." I look up then, and I see the enraged expression go placid.
"Your a good actor, Lucy."
He then pushes past me and storms down the corridor. He doesn't look back.
