In a world of Knights, mages and dragons four kingdoms exist. The humans, the dwarves, the elves and the most formidable, the demons. Magical creatures also cohabited with these dominant races with some being servile while others hostile. Many decades ago, the demons launched a full-scale attack in order to take over the world, but thanks to an alliance between the humans and the elves they were stopped with the dwarves remaining neutral.
This attack was stopped due to the discovery of a new magical force called Ki which was gifted to them by the elemental spirits to the first born child of  the kings and each of the eleven noble families in the case of  humans and the seven chiefs in the case of the elves. This gift was passed down from generation to generation of firstborns in each of the chosen families.
After the war was over, the alliance between the humans and the elves began to crumble and their once strong friendship gave way to hate and distrust. So the king of the humans in order to forestall future attacks decided to create an elite army. Individual regiments of knights and calvary are each led by a battle mage (the first born son of a noble family) who has control of a specific region of the nation.
This gave rise to a society where the first born son of every noble receives all the inheritance, power and military position of a battle mage while the other children are next to neglected and given little to no inheritance.

Taran and Carter were born as twins to the head of the strongest and richest noble family which is the Blackwood family. When their mother was pregnant she was proclaimed to be carrying a sole male child but after an almost tragic incident obscured to many occurred it was discovered that she possessed twins. Unfortunately their mother, Kaila, their father's greatest treasure died in childbirth shortly after Carter's birth.
Their father was a loving man, but after the death of his wife it was as if a spark had been put out in him. He became cold and distant and his only joy was in nurturing his firstborn son Taran who was the spitting image of his mother. As children it was discovered that both twins possessed Ki, which was an anomaly that has never occurred before. But their father, being an unbending totalitarian poured all of his attention and affection on Taran, the firstborn and all but neglected Carter the second.
As children Taran and Carter were the closest of brothers but as they matured into teens they grew apart due to the discrimination and neglect their father showed to Carter in contrast to the love, affection and attention their father poured on Taran. In their father's eyes Taran was the perfect firstborn son while Carter was trash that couldn't have come from his loins.
                            *****
At the age of sixteen, each firstborn child is taken to train in a prestigious academy called the Royal academy. This academy is responsible for raising outstanding battle mages and valiant knights and soldiers who are responsible for protecting the future of the human nation called Avalon. There, they will be trained to be battle mages and control their respective armies.
One week before Taran was to leave to become a battle mage he mysteriously disappeared leaving a letter saying that he was leaving to chase his dreams and run away from a destiny he believes wasn't his and that Carter should take his place since he always wanted to be a battle mage anyway and possesses Ki. His father's despair knew no bounds but in order to save face he sends Carter to the academy. Here, a new dawn begins in Carter's life and probably, destiny awaits him........
