Tom hung back as he spotted his brand-new girlfriend sitting in the school cafeteria. He had been in agony all weekend long, fussing over if he should text her first, or wait for her to text him. In the end, there had been no texts and he worried that she was angry with him, or maybe she didn't want to date him anymore?
He took a deep breath and approached Chrissy. She was sitting with a friend with glasses and long brown hair, a slew of binders and papers set out before them in neat piles.
"Once I get the script done, then we can record." Chrissy was saying, her tone completely serious and focused.
"And then I can start editing the video." Her friend chimed in looking over all their notes, "It'll take me about a week to finish that."
"Hey, you look like you're working too hard for a Monday!" Tom said as he sat down across from them, his heart thumping wildly as Chrissy met his eyes.
"We like to be organized." The brunet defended quietly as she pushed her glasses further up her nose.
"Hi." Chrissy said with a big breath, then ducked his eye contact and began tucking away all her notes.
Tom tapped his foot nervously, trying hard to read her, "Where's your shirt?"
Chrissy looked up blankly.
He sat up straighter to show off the band shirt she had picked up for him.
"Oh, right my shirt." She said in a weird tone, "It's... in the wash."
"Tell me you're joking."
"What?"
"You don't wash a brand-new signed T!" he pointed out in disbelief.
"Gross." The brunet mumbled.
"I'm sure it will be fine. It is signed in permanent marker, right?" Chrissy said, again avoiding his eye contact.
Tom watched her in bewilderment as she carefully filed all her notes into her binder. "What is all that anyway?" he asked, hoping the change of subject would clear the air.
"Our assignment." Chrissy explained with a hint of impatience, "Tracy and I need to film a short video."
"You two crunching? When's it due?"
"Three weeks." the friend, Tracy, answered casually.
Tom blinked in surprise, "And you're working on it now!? Who knew my girlfriend was so organized?" he chuckled.
Both girls looked at him like he had just spoken in Germen.
"Your dating?" Tracy asked with a scrunch of her nose.
Chrissy blinked rapidly, "Yeah." She confirmed breathlessly.
"Yeah?" Tom prompted, eyebrows pinched.
Chrissy pressed her lips together and smiled, "Yep. You're my boyfriend!"
Tracy looked like she had swallowed a bug.
Tom cracked a smile, "Yeah."
Chrissy fidgeted with her backpack, "I have to go now. Bye."
Tracy shoved her stuff together and cast Tom a weird look as she scrambled after Chrissy, leaving sitting in bewilderment.
On the other side of town in a different high school, another grade eleven guy was feeling much the same as Tom.
"Nice shirt." Hudson complemented as he caught up to Jen in the hall.
Jen jumped and shrieked in surprise, "Oh, it's you. Hey."
"Hey," Hudson chuckled, "So where'd you get it?" he pointed to the signed band shirt.
Jen looked down before bursting into a large grin, "Oh, at this concert I went to with this gu..." she faded off and looked at him with wide eyes.
"With who?" Hudson prompted.
"With someone." She finished in a flat tone.
Hudson frowned in confusion, but she didn't elaborate, so he forged ahead, "So about the party- I think my sisters friends started a rumor about us- just don't pay attention to it, ok?"
Jen stopped and looked at him with wide eyes, "What kind of rumor!?"
Hudson cleared his throat nervously, "Uh, you know, it's just a dumb rumor that we uh..."
"Hooked up at the party!?"
"Yeah- I didn't have anything to do with starting it. like I said, just ignore it." he said quickly.
"Is it true!?"
Hudson stared back at her, at a loss for words, "What?"
Jen sputtered into a laugh, "What? I'm joking! I mean, of course we didn't hook up or anything! Right?"
Hudson stuttered for a moment, searching her face for some sign of the girl he had gotten to know. This one seemed like a completely different person.
The bell rung and Jen inched away, "Ok, well bye."
Hudson watched her go, his brain short circuiting.
"Hey man." One of his friends greeted as he hurried down the hall.
"Hey." Hudson half-heartedly began walking with him to his next class, "Do you know anything about, like, bipolar disorder?"
"Isn't it like mood swings and stuff?" his friend scrunched up his face.
"Yeah, or like acting really weird?"
His friend smirked, "Is this about that girl you told me about?"
Hudson shook his head, still trying to understand, "I don't get it, one minute she's normal and the next she's, like a whole other person!"
His friend shrugged, "Beats me, man"
