Nat's heart dropped when she saw you lying there, body half-hidden under a pile of rubble. No, no, no. She couldn't lose you. Not you. She's already lost so many people. How could God or fate or destiny or whatever cosmic being that divined all that was and all there ever will be do this? How could another thing—the best thing—be taken from Nat?
She was vaguely aware of the rest of the team behind her, watching as she fell to her knees, reaching out for you. She was scared to touch you. Would she make things worse? Would you lose any chance you had at survival if she touched you before the med team arrived?
"Y/N..." she said, her voice barely above a whisper. She felt something wet on her face. Was she crying? She raised her hand to wipe the tears away, but it seemed that acknowledging her tears only made them come harder. "Y/N? Can you wake up for me, sweetie?"
The heavy clunk of boots behind her told Nat that Steve had walked up to her. He knelt beside her, hand resting on her shoulder. "Nat, I don't think—"
"She's fine!" Nat protested, shaking off Steve's hand. "She just...She needs to nap. She fought hard. She deserves a nap. B-But, we need to get out of here. We need to get to safety, and then she can nap—"
"I don't think this is the kind of nap a person wakes up from—"
"NO! Don't say that! Don't fucking say that! She's FINE! She...She just..." Nat sobbed, falling forward, hands covering her face. "I can't lose her. I can't lose her. She's everything, she means everything to me! It wasn't supposed to be like this!"
Someone else—Sam—came up on the other side of Nat, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her into a tight hug. "It's okay. Let it out, Nat. Let it out."
Nat hugged him tight, her tears drenching his suit. "I cant't lose her. She's not gone!"
"Shh, it's okay, it's okay," Sam said, rubbing her back.
"No, it's not! I didn't even get to tell her that I love her!"
"She loved you, too. She loved you so much," Sam said. "And she knew you did. Believe me, she knew you loved her."
But that wasn't enough, knowing that you knew. Because now...the entire future Nat wanted with you was ripped from her. She would never get to ask you on a real date. She would never get to ask you to be hers. She would never tell you she loved you, never ask you to marry her. Never get to retire from the team, move out to the mountains, have a family with you. It was gone. It was ripped away, gone before it could even be hers.
A piece of her died that day.
