"I promise."
Those were the last words my brother and I said to my father before he passed away in my arms.
Our father was our everything. He was the one that was there for us when nobody else was. He raised us and taught us how to be a family. My dad was my hero.
When My brother, Kai, was three, my mother had me. She was homeless at the time, and slept with a mental man just to stay in his house for a while. After she had me, she dropped my brother and I off on his doorstep. Now, I know you're thinking 'Why did she sleep with a mental man and what happened to Kai's father?'
Kai's father was killed on impact in a car crash on the way to the hospital to support my mother while she was giving birth. It's pretty sad. My mother was hooked on drugs and she was also a semi-prostitute. After Kai's father passes, my mother only had enough to take care of her and Kai for a year. Exactly after a year, they were evicted. My mom got back into drugs and the person sold her drugs and gave her a place to stay as long as she gave them what they want. She lived like this with Kai for 8 months and cried every night praying for a better life, not for her, but for Kai. She wasn't comfortable with him sitting outside the door while she was taking care of 'business.' She eventually stopped and became homeless again. One night she just walked up to any old house and knocked on the door crying. A man appeared at the door. He looked to be a bit slow, but my mother didn't care. All she wanted was a place to stay. She began begging him for a place to stay and all he could tell her was how pretty she was. She told him that she would do anything to stay with him. Once again all he could do was tell her that she was pretty. She became frustrated and broke down in front of the man. He felt bad and told her not to cry and to come inside. All my mother could do was beg and plead to stay with the man for a few days. He told her if she did there was nothing he could do for such a pretty lady. He asked her how she was going to pay. One thing led to another and next thing you know, my mom was pregnant and I was on the way.
After my mother was released from the hospital, she took my brother and I home with the man. He was having trouble unlocking the door when my mother kissed kissed Kai and I goodbye. Then she took off. When the man finally got the door unlocked, he turned around with the biggest smile on his face. It only took 2.5 seconds before it turned into a frown.
"Meghan! Meghan where are you? Meghan I got the door! You can come back now!" He yelled.
It took a good 20 minutes of him yelling from the font yard for my mother, but little did he know, she was gone for good.
The man came back and asked Kai where my mother was, but Kai was just as confused as the rest of us. He and I were a crying mess. The man came to me and picked me up.
"There, there little one, daddy's here for you two now. I'll always be here. I promise." He said. And from that moment, this man was now known as our father.
