You Live, I Survive

I have a mutual on Twitter @/jooniesfairie who's one of the most talented writers I've ever seen. One thing about her writing that I love a lot is how she uses italics to express dialogue. So, I got inspired and did the same (with bold too cuz extra dramatic). Enjoy!

On a cold winter evening
A flower springs up from it's roots
Delicate, blue, and charming.
And henceforth, my duty sworn
"Nurture this flower as your own"

I look after it as best I can
I provide for it from this barren land.
Gathering tips and advice from my seniors
I delay its senescense by giving up my own years.

But is it really mine?
If so, why does it hurt?
With every pang of pain it inflicts upon me
A petal detaches and sets itself free.
With every thorn induced blood flow
Out from its stem, it lets another one grow.

You want my love, yet you won't take it.
You need my care, yet you won't accept it.
Why do you hurt me when it hurts you too?
Don't you see, this feud between us two
Will end only in disaster, not victory
Of body or soul (of you or me!)

I look wistfully at my peers
Their flowers, all big and beautiful
Fields of roses, sunflowers, and what not
While mine sits here, beginning to rot.

If it's so easy for them
Then why not for me?
What's the point of my smarts, dreams, and beauty
If I can't fulfill this simple duty?

But past the confusion and frustration
This twisted relation remains true
This flower is my life-long partner
That I can never escape from
No matter how much I wish to.
