"Why won't he wake up?" I hear a muffled voice ask. It sounds like I'm under water and the mysterious is above the surface.
"He's still reliving a memory, dumbass." I hear a different voice reply.
"Damn. It was just a question. You don't have to be a bitch about it." The first voice mumbles.
"I'm a bitch about everything. You should know that by now."
"True...well can you at least help me wake him up?"
"AYE YO, BITCH, WAKE YO ASS UP!" my eyes immediately fling open to find a girl standing before me. Her midnight-black hair flowed beautifully to her shoulders in tight curls. Long eyelashes frame her deep, nut-brown eyes. They remind me of hot chocolate on a cold winter night as the snowflakes gently float to the ground outside the frosty window. Her full, plump lips were adorned by velvety lipstick the color of a dark red rose. The dark complexion of her cocoa skin glows bright in the sun shining over us, giving her an angelic look. Her skintight raven-black jeans and her white floral tank top show off her broad hips. She looks to be not older than 20.
"Who the f*ck are you?" I croak out.
"Who the f*ck are you?" she asks pointing her finger at me for more emphasis.
"I'm Shane Dawson."
"Shane who?" she asks.
"Shane Dawson. I'm a YouTuber."
"A YouTuber? What the hell is a YouTuber?"
"A person who makes videos on YouTube."
"What is YouTube?"
"...Forget it. I told you who I am. So who are you?"
"I'm Kimiko. And this is Hayley." She moves out of the way and motions towards a very young girl leaning up against a tree and tossing a rock up and down. Her hair is a rich shade of mahogany. It flows in waves down to her shoulders, adorning her porcelain skin with faint freckles scattered across her cheeks like stars in beautiful night sky. She, too, had deep brown eyes that you could just stare at forever and still not understand how such beautiful eyes could have so much pigmentation in them. A straight nose and arched eyebrows make her seem almost picture perfect at all angles. Black glasses and a pretty infinity necklace on top of a plain white t-shirt accessorize her faded blue jeans and red & gray jacket. She looks to be in middle school, maybe sixth or seventh grade. She's simple, but that what makes her pulchritudinous.
"Oh my god. You're Shane Dawson." She says with a huge smile on her face.
"I'm guessing you're a fan of mine?" I ask, sitting up on the grassy ground.
"Fan?" Kimiko asks. "More like psychotic stalker. The entire time you were out of it, she was screaming and freaking out yelling OH MY GOD IT'S SHANE F*CKING DAWSON! She's basically a walking encyclopedia of weirdness because she told me every little detail about you that I don't even think you know about yourself. She was jumping up and down and kept poking you before saying OH MY GOD I JUST TOUCHED SHANE DAWSON! I think she's gotten all her fangirlness out of her."
"Not quite." Hayley says. "OH MY GOD IT'S SHANE DAWSON!" She runs towards me and tackles me, engulfing me into a tight hug while squealing. "Okay. Now it's all out of my system." She composes herself and walks back over to the tree she was lying against, after let me go.
"So how'd you die?" Kimiko asks me, sitting down next to Hayley under the shady tree.
"Gunshot by an intruder. Died in my living room. You?"
"Carbon monoxide poisoning. Died in my best friend's bed at a sleepover. She died, too, but I haven't seen her here at all."
"And you, Hayley?"
"Sword." She says.
"Sword?" I ask.
"Sword." She repeats.
"How do you die from a...sword?"
"Adventure Time style."
"She's lying." Kimiko states. "She died from head trauma in a car crash."
"Yeah. I was on my way to Barnes & Noble to buy Joey's new book, In Real Life, when my mom was trying to send a quick text to my dad and she crashed right into an 18-wheeler. She survived but she's paralyzed from the waist down. I didn't have my seatbelt on and my head went right through the window shield. Died instantly. Didn't feel a thing."
Oh my god. These girls are so young. And to die the way they did? They don't deserve this. None of us deserve this.
"How old are you guys?" I ask them, trying to change the subject.
"I'm 18 and Hayley's 12. I was packing my things to move into my college dorm room in two weeks. I guess I'll never get my doctor's degree. I wanted to be a pediatrician."
"A pediatrician?" Hayley asks.
"You're a bitch. Kids would hate it if you were the one responsible for stabbing needles into their ass!"
"Girl, I passed calculus with a 98% I could've been whatever the hell I wanted to be. I could've been a damn mermaid at Sea World if I wanted to with my clean grades!"
"You two are bickering like sisters. Did you know each other before you died?"
"Oh hell no." Kimiko answers. "I lived in New York and she lived in Ohio. When I died I ran into her on my trail to nowhere and we've stuck together ever since. No matter how much she irritates the hell out of me with her 'YouTube' shit, she's really cool and she's all I've got in this world. I don't know what I would do without her. Sistas gotta stick together."
"Is that a Cheetah Girls reference?" I ask, pointing to her.
"Is that a grown man who knows Cheetah Girl references?" she asks, pointing back at me.
"I still don't understand how this girl doesn't know about YouTube." Hayley says.
"I know, right? When did she die? In the 1700s?" I ask sarcastically.
"I died in 2014 for your information. You guys are idiots." She folds her arms and walks off down the grassy field. "You can find the golden memory yourself, you assholes!" she yells as she gets further and further away from us.
"Golden memory?" I ask. "What's that?"
"I barely know myself." Hayley says, shrugging her shoulders. "We just found this note lying on the ground that said we're supposed to help you find your golden memory. I think it's the memory of your death, but I don't know who sent it or why they sent Kimiko and me to help you find it."
"It's not hanging on my memory tree?"
"No. That's too easy. It said the memory is far, far away, hanging on a blue jacaranda tree."
"How the hell are we supposed to find that?"
"I have no freaking clue. Let's just follow Kimiko and see where she takes us." We both get up and slowly walk towards Kimiko whose so far ahead of us.
"Wait." I say, stopping in my tracks. "Do you smell that?" both Hayley and I turn around to find the source of the all too familiar scent. I squint my eyes and look far into the horizon to see trees going up in a blaze as the red and orange ignited flames travel in our direction.
Oh no.
It's a f*cking forest fire.
