CHAPTER 1

It was the summer of '85, school had just ended. I finished up my junior year decently, but after that exhausting school year I was ready for what the summer had in store for me.

"TRIN YOU HAVE FIVE MINUTES BEFORE I LEAVE YOU!"

I rolled my eyes in annoyance while shutting off my boombox, "COMING, for fucks sake."

Now the thing is my summer would be perfect IF, I wasn't working a summer job. My mom every year since I started high-school demanded I get a summer job so I won't "sit around being lazy," as she would say. I'm not really a lazy person, I just don't like going out. This summer is different, I wanted to experiment and live up to my teenage dreams. It was my last summer before being an "adult" I wasn't ready to be grown.

I rushed down the stairs with my bags in my hand to see my mom staring at me angrily, "Let's go, you can't be late on your first day."
I walked to the passengers seat of my moms car and opened the door while throwing all my bags in the back. Luckily the drive wasn't too long because I was not prepared for a "discussion" on how I should start being more responsible.

"Goodluck, be sure to smile! Make a good impression," My mom said as she parked in front of Hawkins community pool. Was I terrified? Maybe a little, it was my first year working as a lifeguard and I do feel a bit inexperienced. I wouldn't say I'm the best swimmer, in-fact I almost drowned as a child because I didn't use my arms to swim. Feet only.

I unbuckled my seatbelt and grabbed my bags from the backseat. My heart raced as I looked outside the car window. "Go on, don't be late now because you're nervous," My mom laughed while ushering me out the car.

Finally I got off the car after some encouragement and walked into the building with some slight confidence. The building smelled like cigarettes and sunscreen, a mixture of teenagers and kids, weird.

"Is that Trinity?" A small group chuckled. I looked around to see Heather Holloway with two other girls standing behind the counter. Heather Holloway had been working as a lifeguard since she was 15, everyone loved her there. She used to be such a sweetheart til she started hanging around Billy Hargrove then his attitude began to rub on her I guess.

I smiled while looking at her and nodding. I was trying to avoid small talk at all costs. "Hm, she got shy guys. Awww, poor Trinity!! Let's make her feel welcomed okay?" Heather spoke to the girls behind her while they giggled at everything she said, it was like they were her minions. I turned away rolling my eyes to hold my composure, "I'm just looking for the manager."

The minions pointed to a door in the hallway beside them, that clearly read "MANAGER." Well that definitely made me feel stupid. They giggled as I walked over to the door and knocked.

"Come in!"

I opened the door to see a middle aged woman grabbing sun visors and whistles out of a box. She turned to face me and greeted me with a smile, "Trinity Wilson? So finally glad to meet you! I'm happy your on our team now! These are for you." She handed me sandals, a swimsuit, sunglasses, a visor and a whistle. "I'm Mrs. Waterman," I shook her hand as best as I could while carrying all of my goodies.

Mrs. Waterman explained the duty as a lifeguard and explained what I would be doing for the first two weeks. The first two weeks seemed as I would just be observing actual lifeguards. I was a little disappointed but also glad to hear I was not going to have to work too hard.

My first work day was slow, my main source of entertainment was counting how many women Billy flirted with and how swoon the ladies were over him. I ate snacks while trying to keep up with the soap opera going on in my head, and before you know it the clock hit 4pm. The pool closes at 4pm, but we have to stay til 4:45pm to get everyone out of the pool and clean up.

"POOLS CLOSED NOW! EVERYONE OUT!!" Billy blew his whistle and scattered the kids out of the pool. The kids ran out the pool as fast as they could. Billy was known to be scary and the kids were obviously intimidated, I mean who wouldn't be? He laughed loudly with the rest of the lifeguards, "Now thats how you do it!" The lifeguards clapped and whistled at Billy's comment.

"Billy, that's not a nice way to get the kids out," Mrs. Waterman walked out to the pool. Billy grinned," Mrs. Waterman, I was just doing my job." Billy had a way of speaking that got him out of things, he was especially popular with the older ladies.

While the rest of the lifeguards cleaned up I sat down and waited for the clock to hit 4:45. I heard Heather and her group laughing and whispering around the whole time and It was becoming too repetitive.

"Hey Trinity, did you hear about that party at Carvers place?" Heather purposely hit the broom with my foot to get my attention. Jason Carver was a popular basketball player, I had known him from middle school. He was nice back then, a bit nerdy, but popularity also changed him and we hadn't spoke since 8th grade english class.

"Nope." I said.

"Want to come?" Heather giggled and so did the minions. At first I did want to say no because truly I could care less, but then I remembered my dreams for this summer. I wanted this summer to be different, to say yes to things I usually didn't say yes to. I was never really seen in high school, maybe this was my summer to be a somebody once school starts. Maybe just maybe. "Sure," I looked up at Heather while seeing how shocked she looked at my response. She looked around before saying, "Fine, I'll send you the address if you can get me some marijuana, and some booze. I want to have a good night," Heather smirked and crossed her arms.

"We have a deal."
