Sang's POV
"We are almost there. I'm pretty sure of it." Nathan said looking at the map again.
"According to the compass, maps and pedometer, I would calculate we have another mile, maybe two." Kota confirmed.
My nerves were wracking my body. Would they let me in when I get there or will I be turned away to make it on my own? Do I get to stay with these fabulous guys that I feel safe with or will I be forced to stay with a group of girls?
Owen said I would have the option, but that it was unusual for a group of guys to have one girl with them. Sean informed me that there would most likely be about ten times as many males as females at the shelter, but I should still feel safe. If not, I was to have one of them by my side. North told me to "stay away from fucking big ass Russians" but I'm not sure how I would come across them here in North Carolina. I will heed his warning though.
"I can't wait to get a shower!" Victor exclaimed.
"How is that even possible? I thought it required some kind of power to keep up water pressure for showers to work."
"Our shelters are self sustaining. They produce the power necessary through hydro power. The shelter is right on the river. We have gardens that grow fruits and vegetables, animals for milk, eggs and meats to eat. Everyone has to work somewhere on the property. There are rules we have to follow, but it will be worth it in the end." Luke explained.
I'm sure they will help me learn all the rules. And as far as working goes, I am willing to work. I can imagine there are all kinds of jobs. From working with the animals to working in the gardens. I wonder if we will eat as a whole shelter or if each group will be responsible for their own meals? There are so many thoughts running through my head, it is getting hard to focus on my walking.
"As long as we can all stick together, we can get through anything." Silas put his arm around my shoulders. "Stick close to us Aggele."
"I will. New places always make me nervous." I pushed my finger to my mouth as I fretted over the unknown.
"None of that insecure girly shit! You are beautiful, confident, and strong as hell. They will see what we see as soon as you get there." Gabriel reassured me.
"You mean trouble that follows Trouble around?" I half joked, half feared that's what he saw.
Gabriel chopped me on the head, "Shut the fuck up! Only I am allowed to call you Trouble." He laughed.
The rest of the walk was quiet. Before we knew it we were surrounded but a group of five big guys holding guns at the ready. "We are the Blackbourne team from Charleston." Owen stated.
Another guy walked up behind them with a clipboard in hand. "Our records show you are a group of nine males. There is no notation of a female."
"This is Sang Sorenson and she has been with us since the day after the world went silent. I will vouch for her." Owen spoke with an air of confidence. I was shaking like a willow branch in the breeze.
"We can all vouch for her character. And as a group we have a lot to offer here at the shelter. I for one am a doctor."
"It's about time some of the Charleston teams started showing up." One of the guys with the guns said as he lowered it to his side. The others all followed suit. "And better yet, we now have a doctor on site."
"We had a veterinarian. We weren't completely without medical knowledge." Another guy spoke up.
I whispered to North, who was right next to me, "Is this the shelter or is there a compound behind walls somewhere?"
