The fox barked. It yipped and yapped. It spoke.

"Aw, don't look so down, Hunter." (Y/n) took a seat next to him.
Hunter was sat at the edge of his bed, looking down and twiddling with his fingers. "But, Belos hasn't given us any new assignments since the whole Latissa incident! All we have is that mission at the knee next week! He even took my staff away."
"Chin up, King, let's go do something to take your mind off it, huh? Let's go out. Er- let's... Let's have a picnic or something. Down at the stream where I first got Pip. Whaddya say?"
Hunter smiled and picked his head up. "Yeah, I'd like that."
The pair left his room. Hunter snuck down into the cafeteria to steal some food and (Y/n) went next door, to her room, to grab a blanket.
They met back up in front of their rooms and packed the things together, wrapping the food in the blanket and carrying it down to the river.
The walk down to the river was peaceful. Filled with a comfortable silence that both young witches enjoyed. Pip and the cardinal followed close behind as they entered the forest behind the castle.
"Here's a good spot, you think?" (Y/n) asked as they stopped in a clearing of trees in front of the riverbed.
The forest seemed relatively the same as before. The edge of the forest ended a few feet away from the riverbed, leaving a nice strip of grass to sit on. They could hear the slow sound of water trickling down the slow moving stream.
Hunter nodded and set the blanket down. He unwrapped the food and laid the mat down on the soft, green grass.
"Alrighty, let's see what you stole us."
On the blanket was a couple of PB & J sandwiches lying on the blanket for them. Pip and the cardinal laid down on the corner of the blanket to take a nap while their owners had their picnic. "Ooh, not bad." (Y/n) cheered, picking a sandwich up.So the girl and the boy ate and laughed together while the fox and the cardinal had their own bonding moment.
'You think she knows?" The cardinal chirped.
'Knows what?' Pip squeaked back.
'Knows that he likes her." The bird tilted his head towards his owner.
'I don't think he even knows that he likes her.' Pip rolled his eyes and laid his head down for a nap.
(Y/n) and Hunter took bites out of their PB & J's, enjoying the flavor of peanutblood and goreberry jelly.
But as they talked, someone hid in the bushes, watching them, listening to them. The person concealed by the bushes took a step, crushing a twig and snapping it. And the sound of the snapping twig awoke a bear who slept nearby. The bear raised its head and noticed the person who'd woken it up. The culprit quickly booked it away, running in whatever direction the bear wasn't in.
"Do you hear that?" Hunter perked his head up and narrowed his eyes at a brush of bushes.
"Help help help- wild bear, WILD BEAR!!" Luz the human yelled as she ran out of the brush in the direction of Hunter and (Y/n).
"Human?" (Y/n) muttered to herself.
The human ran behind (Y/n) and hid as a colossal bear clawed through the brushes. Its fur was a pastel pink and its eyes were a ruby red.
(Y/n) simply twirled her finger and the aggravated bear was pacified in just a matter of seconds.
"Oh, thank you!" The human sighed in relief, "You're really good at beastkeeping, (Y/n)."
"Thanks." She smiled at the human.
The human stared at the pair and the picnic in front of her, "So what're you guys doing here? Are you on a date?!" She asked eagerly.
Hunter's face grew pale. As if he'd seen a ghost. And then faded to red as he clutched his fists in embarrassment.
"No," Hunter said, flustered.
"We're just having a picnic. What makes you think that?" (Y/n) shrugged and looked at the human,
"Well, in Latissa, Hunter said that he wouldn't mind you being-"
"-ON A PICNIC WITH ME!" Hunter interrupted loudly, standing up and putting his hand over her mouth to shush her. Their eyes met and Luz could see how visibly peeved Hunter was, while Hunter could see a cheeky smirk on Luz's face.
(Y/n) blinked a couple times and stared at Hunter.
"Mmmmhmmm..." The human slyly smiled at Hunter. "That he wouldn't mind you being on a picnic with him."
"Well... what were you doing here Human??" Hunter jeered and poked her with his finger.
"I was just moseying on by, in the forest, not going to spy on the castle, when I heard you two over here. By the river."
Hunter and (Y/n) stared at the human in silence.
"..Yeah, that's not suspicious or anything. Anyways, how's Lilith doing?" (Y/n) asked,"She's doing great!" The human exclaimed, "She actually lives with her mom now."
"No, don't just change the subject! What were you doing here, Human." Hunter grilled the human, glaring at her as he did so.
"Eh heh..." She awkwardly chuckled, "Welp! Gotta fly!"
The human bolted away on an owl staff belonging to the Owl Lady herself.
"She was nice." (Y/n) commented, watching the human fly away.
"No, she's not." Hunter pouted, returning to eating his sandwich.
