"Wake up, precious girls. I need you awake. Your enhancement surgeries are almost prepped and ready to go." My mother chirps as she stands outside our doors.
I grunt in the effort to sit up, my back stiff from how I slept. A guard is given a set of keys and opens our door. Lily and I walk out of our doors to see my mother in a fresh white suit with her hair into a slick ponytail and red lips.
She begins to walk away, gesturing with her clean acrylic white nails for us to follow, and with her guards on our backs, we are forced.
"So, I am sure you have plenty questions to ask. I suggest you ask them before we hit the Blue Room main hatch." She says aloud as we walk back out to the entrance.
"Where are we?" Lily says as we look at the crisp clean walls that surround us. My mother chuckles and shakes her head.
"Any question that could be useful to the project at hand darling." She laughs as we walk down another corridor.
"Alright then. Where's Aaron? And what are you gonna do to us now that you have us here?" I ask sarcastically. She stops in her tracks and turns to look back at us.
"No need for the hostility Delilah, I merely want you to be curious about what we will do to improve you lifespan. Project Diana is merely a way for the human body to become more evolved. We take your strengths and enhance them. Fail to cooperate will result in your deaths but," She shrugs.
"Let's have it not come to such drastic terms. Though if need be, the men behind you will do whatever I ask of them. Whether to kill you with breaking your neck or shooting you in the back of the head. And your precious little Aaron has succeeded in his first few trials with the surgery to remove the chip. He'll live." She says as she stares into the depths of my eyes.
The intensity of her glare makes me shrink back the tiniest bit. But I stand my ground the rest of the way.
"So if he's OK, can we see him then?" Lily asks. I send her a sideways glance before I look at my mother. She hums before she turns back around and walks off.
A few minutes of us just standing there awkwardly, she has a drowsy looking Aaron in tow. He looks completely out of sync. And his pupils are blown wide. She comes to a halt in front of us as she signals for the guards to let us go.
The cuffs clamber to the ground as we lurch forward to grab Aaron. His pants could be heard from halfway down the hall.
"His body is rejecting the enhancement surgery. Sadly, he most likely won't make it through the night. Unless we have another procedure to reduce the power we'd placed within him." She says as she kneels down to our level. She grips his face and flashes a pen light to check his eyes.
"Nevermind, his body is showing good signs actually. Eyes unresponsive to light. Shortness of breath. Feverish skin. He might actually pull through. Outstanding." She mutters as she continues to check his vitals while we hold him.
"That's him pulling through? Those signs basically point him to death!" I cry out as she let's him back into my arms.
Aaron mumbles something unintelligible as he leans into my side. His head rest heavily on my shoulder as I run my fingers through his matted hair softly. My mother catches sight of this and glances at me suspiciously.
"Yes Bethany. We dated. And he and Lily slept together. You have no right to judge. Just.... take us to the Blue Room." I remark. She chuckles as she stands up.
"You needn't worry. I do not judge you two. But you could have done better than him." She says as she backs away from him. She claps her hands and the guards grab him from us.
"Hey! Watch it, be careful with him!" Lily shouts as we stand up. Bethany beckons us forward. And as we step through the doors, my brain begins to pound. Like someone's trying to crush my skull.
It's almost like a pressure building in my head. And when I check to see if Lily feels the same thing, she stumbles forward clutching her head. She rights herself and clears her throat.
My mother smiles as she turns to look around the room. There are so many people in here. Children to elderly people. All wearing pure blue uniforms.
"Oh you've got to be kidding me." I mutter as she pulls us into changing rooms. The clothes rest on a hanger by the door. The room is small, with a chair resting in the corner and a mirror hanging on a wall.
"Get changed. As soon as you are out of the room, we shall place you in a pool of water from the Fountain of Tigress. It shall show us where your true abilities lie." She smiles as she walks away, the sound of her shoes hitting the ground fading.
Lily and I give each other a look before stepping into our separate rooms. Once my door is closed, I look for a way I can get out. There aren't any windows, but 2 vents placed symmetrical of each other. A hard knock startles me out of my recon.
"Give me a minute. Damn." I shout out. I quickly slip into the uniform and step out of the room. Lily comes out a minute later, looking down at her suit to fix the thin straps on her shoulders.
They lead us into a large teal room and lock the door. I grab the handle and jiggle it a few times. It doesn't budge. I turn to see two pools sat in the middle of the room. I walk to the one on the right.
The water is still, an array of colors flashing against the surface. Lily looks up at me and shrugs. I put my hand in and it feels like the life is being sucked out of me. I pull it back and shake the water off. I glare toward the glass.
"Get into the tub. Everything will be taken care of from out here once you do. We will be doing these trials over the next few days." My mother says over the intercom.
I grab the other side of the tub and put my body in. Lily does the same.
"Go all the way under, once you do, we will begin." Someone else says. I recognize that voice. That's Lily's mom. I turn my head to Lily. And she is in pure shock.
"Mom?" Lily whispers.
"Hi baby." Her mother responds.
"Mya?" I say. And she chuckles out a small
"Yes. Hi Delilah."
