The winter breeze hit her face gently, crossing over the tears that had stained her face. She had been there since the morning, sitting on his grave, wondering what she could have done differently, wondering why it wasn't her. Her stomach growled pulling her out of her thoughts, but she didn't want to leave, she wasn't ready to say goodbye.
Everyone else had left right after the funeral but she couldn't and she didn't, the one she loved the most was buried, kept from her by the soil that covered the earth. She will no longer hear his voice, no longer see his blue eyes shine like they used to every time he saw her. He was gone, taken from her.As she stood up and starred at the grave stone before she silently vowed to kill whoever was responsible for his death. They would suffer just as she had suffered, maybe even more. She wanted to scream but she was too tire and too hungry to do anything but to walk home and join her family even if that was the last thing she wanted.
She walked out toward the exit of the empty cemetery, the lights flickered as she exited it. She stood at the entrance and looked at how the world continued while the dead lay in what she hoped would be peace. She took a deep breath and walked further away from the cemetery, kicking every stone that lay on her path. She couldn't understand why he did that for her, had he had so much faith in her that the only thing was to sacrifice himself for her? It wasn't supposed to be like that. No, it wasn't, she was the one who was supposed to be buried, she was supposed to be the one without breath in their lungs and yet it was him, why? Why?
She walked toward a coffee shop after the whiff of coffee floated in her nostrils and reminded her of her hunger. She sighed heavily before she opened the door of the nearly empty shop. Maybe it was better, she wanted space and too many people would cause her to lose control and she couldn't afford to be exposed, especially after Gavin sacrificed himself for her. Who would love her like that again? He was the only one who accepted her for who she was and for what she was.
"What can I get you sweetheart?" asked the lady behind the counter. Her natural red head bounced a bit when she tilted her head to the side and looked at her customer with piercing green eyes.
"Uhm... I'm not sure. What do you suggest?" she enquired with a steady voice even though everything inside of her was begging her to scream.
"Well, I suggest the toasted avocado special with hot chocolate." The red-head said and she nodded, "I'm Hailey by the way."
"Lindonia," she said and Hailey nodded.
"That's a pretty unique name."
"Thank you, I'm going to sit at the back and wait thank you for the recommendation." Lindonia said and walked away from the counter leaving Hailey with a curious expression on her face, even her head had tilted a little further.
Hailey walked behind the counter and told the chef the order before she walked over to Lindonia's table, the name was familiar but she didn't know why, maybe she knew Lindonia from somewhere but she couldn't quite place a finger on the exact location. Was it at school? Or maybe it was just on the road somewhere.
"Lindonia have we met before?" She asked pulling out a chair to sit before she clasped her hands and put them on the table.
"I don't believe so, do you recognise me from somewhere?" Hailey shook her head and took a deep breath hoping that maybe it will click on who Lindonia was, how can she have forgotten? Her memory was what she trusted the most and at that moment it was betraying her.
"Your name sounds familiar but I just don't remember where I hearf it but anyway, am I going to see you again?" Lindonia shrugged and looked into Hailey's eyes.
"Why?" a smirk crossed Hailey's features before she leaned back on her chair and ran her hand through her red hair, Lindonia watched her every moment as if stuck in a trance.
"I seem to have taken a fancy in you."
"But you just met me."
"Well, that is true but I don't see how it is a reason why I shouldn't take any fancy," she said and Lindonia giggled, shaking her head. "So, will I be seeing you again?"
"I don't see why not."
"Good, maybe then I'll remember where I heard your name." Hailey stood up and went to get Lindonia's order before she placed it gently on the table and returned to her original spot behind the counter. She didn't understand how she couldn't remember Lindonia, the name itself was unique, one of a kind and difficult to get out of the mind but as she stood there glancing at Lindonia from time to time, she had never felt betrayed as she did.
She had barely touched her food even if her stomach growled in annoyance at the action, she couldn't eat, felt too numb and eating was like a chore she wasn't interested in fulfilling. Her mother or her father or anyone for that matter hadn't called to check up on her, to know where she was was and frankly she didn't care either. She didn't know how much time had passed until she looked up from her food and saw that the coffee shop was dark apart from the light bulb that was directly above her table, Hailey sat at the table across from her, watching her silently as if afraid that she would disturb her if she uttered a word.
"I don't want to eat alone," Lindonia stated gently and looked into Hailey's green eyes and for the time that the silence encompassed them as Hailey tried to figure out what she had meant, Lindonia took the opportunity to take in her features. Her pale skin was creamy under the dim light, her freckles were not clearly visible and the mane had now been put in a ponytail. Her ears were slightly pointy and her slender neck looked smooth. "You are beautiful." She said suddenly making Hailey's eyebrows furrow in confusion.
"Thanks, so what do you mean you don't want to eat alone?"
"I was asking if you would join me."
"I didn't hear the question," Hailey said jokingly and Lindonia laughed before she looked down and poked her toasted bread.
"Will you join me?"
"Sure, but let me go make something for me and something else for you. Plus, I take it that your hot chocolate is no longer hot?" Lindonia took a sip and slowly nodded. "I know and it seems like you've had a rough day, do you want to talk about it?"
"More like a rough week, but no, I don't want to talk about it. I just need something or someone to help me forget about it even if it's just for tonight."
"I know where I can find both."
"Where?"
"The first is in the kitchen and the second well, the second you'll have to wait. Come on, you are going to help me make something and then we'll get out of here, sounds good?"
"Sounds good." Lindonia said and followed Hailey into the dark kitchen, hoping that whatever she had in mind, would erase what had happened to her during the week.
