Vera Flynn Cendance, born to Terra and Noah Cendance, grew up to be quite an unexpected young lady. She never did what was expected of her, but not quite the opposite either. She was simply Vera, there was no other way to describe her unless you wanted to make a list of 352 words. Even then, that would only scratch the surface.
When people told Vera to be ladylike, she'd laugh at them as she straightened up. When they told her to stay clean, she'd dirty up her clothes but her skin would be spotless. When they told her, 'your a strange little girl aren't you?' She'd simply nod with a grin. She was unpredictable unless you knew her, and nobody really did. Except for that boy she'd met in the underground while her merchant father was visiting and brought her along.
He was short, yet still taller then her, with dark hair. She'd nicknamed him Suki, and she'd called him it since. Every time her father would go into the underground Vera would go with, if only to see Suki while she was there. She didn't enjoy much else if the place considering it consisted of dark alleys and dirty slums. But she went because of him.
And he, he began to call her Flynn. Not Vera like her family, but Flynn, because he said it suited her just a tad bit better. And now, at the age of eleven, Vera sat in a carriage with her lilac and pale grey skirts held tight in her hands as she awaited its stopping at the stairwell to the underground.
"Father," she mumbled softly, catching the attention of the man despite her lack of volume. He looked up at her and she continued. "Could you get someone out of the underground? Or, are they stuck there forever." She asked, eyes glued to how her fingers twisted in the fabric of her skirts. Her father huffed a laugh, hand gripping the edge of his seat.
"I mean I could, but why would you ask Vera dear?" He replied, brows raised high on his forehead as he looked to his sheepish daughter. She didn't act like this often, if at all. Something was most definitely up.
"No reason Father." Vera said in a hushed tone, the slightest smile gracing her lips. Her father laughed again, leaning forward and placing a large hand on her shoulder.
"Is there a boy down there? Is that why you always come with me and run off immediately?" Vera's frame straightened significantly, blue eyes darting around as she muttered an 'of course not!' But her father saw right through it.
"If you point him out, then maybe, just maybe, you might see him in the daylight one day." Vera's father stated softly, a knowing smile resting on his face. She understood and nodded, fidgeting in anticipation of seeing Suki again. But it did not turn out as she would have expected.
When the father and daughter reached the bottom of the stairs, Vera began searching for Suki. Word always got around when the Thatchers were coming to visit the below ground city, so he was always there to meet her. Sure enough, he stood leaning against a wall and gave her a little wave. She grinned, turning to her father and humming their code word they'd made up on the way there for when she saw him. At once, the older man looked down at his daughter and nodded, her beginning to pull him towards Suki.
But when they got too him, her father stoooed dead in his tracks and began dragging her away. She let herself be taken away at first, until she realized what was going on and she started pulling away from her father.
"Father! Suki is this way! Your going the wrong way! What are you doing!" She cried, doing her best to pry his fingers of his wrist. He only gave her a stern look and shook his head. Vera burst into tears, sobs racking her tiny body as she continued to pull from her father trying to get to Suki. Trying to get away. But it was no use.
"Suki! Suki?" She screamed, trying desperately to at least see him. But she couldn't. And her Father never let her go back to the underground, never let her away from their townhouse really. It was like he locked her away for good, and whatever seeing Suki had done to her father, Vera's mother agreed with him. Vera was confined to their house, not even allowed to go beyond the back porch. She was miserable to say the least. Absolutely miserable.
She swore to join the military on her twelfth birthday to find Suki. To save him. The only issue, her parents kept her in constant supervision. They'd never let her go sign up, and she had no chance to sneak out. She was locked away like those pretty maidens in her books at the tops of their towers. She was the fine maiden, her home the tower, and her father the fire breathing dragon. Vera did not sign up for the military at the age of twelve. Nor thirteen. Not even fourteen. Instead, the day of her fifteenth birthday, her parents took her into the city for a new necklace and set of skirts, and while there she snuck off and signed up.
She scuffed up her nice shoes and removed her family necklace, a tiny little thing with the name Cendance carved into it, as she didn't want them to know of her lineage. When they asked her name, she said Flynn. Flynn Thatcher. With that, Vera became Flynn, and Flynn never saw her parents again before she was taken to her three year training.
