I woke up to Erica, my roommate slapping me on the cheek, "KATE WAKE UP" she screamed at me. In a rush, I sat up and looked at the alarm clock. "Shit, it's 10:00", I'm late. I jumped out of the covers and threw on some clothes, I honestly didn't even care what I looked like, I needed to get to class as soon as possible.
That's when I remembered I had an exam today that I completely missed, "Fuck Erica, I missed the Entrance Exam!" I said while grabbing my hair in frustration. "Oh girl, you're done for" Erica chuckled at me, I sat down on a large stone by the entrance and took a deep breath. "You know what, I already missed it, do you have anything important today?" I asked her, trying not to absolutely freak out. "Please tell me you're asking to skip our classes today." She grinned at me, I gave her the answer she needed by smiling back at her and she took my hand and ran to the parking lot. Erica probably had one of the nicest cars here, she had a shiny black Ferrari waiting in the parking lot, only really because her parents were absolutely loaded. "Let's go!" She exclaimed, I think this is the most excited I've seen her, probably because I'm not exactly one who skips class on the usual.
She tried to drive quickly past the book store on Main Street but I stopped her "Erica, please let me go in, you can drop me off for a little then come back and we can go do something fun!" Books were my absolute favorite. "Fine, whatever." She scoffed and dropped me off in front, the store was 3 stories with fresh new books and as soon as I walked in it was like I took a trip to autumn itself, the smell was warm yet spicy like cinnamon, it was very comforting. As I ran my fingers along the shelves admiring all of the books, I found a huge section for the paranormal, which always peaked my interest, that and romance.
By the time I was out of the bookstore I'd spent around $200 on books, I was excited to read them on the rooftop of the apartment Erica and I rented. We decided to stay in an apartment about a block from the college, because Erica wasn't a fan of the college dorms. The rooftop had a wonderful view of the streets where people roamed and music blared at night, which we, Erica and I, always loved. The parties were great here, especially the college parties we went to. I walked out of the store to call Erica when I almost tripped over a guy passing by. "Hey watch where you're goi-" he paused. When I looked up his looks were mesmerizing, the way his black curly hair fell over the crystal brown eyes of his and the way all of the colors blended with his beautiful brown skin. Even his clothes were enough to catch me off guard, with the black suit, white tie classic.
It felt like ages as we sat there, staring at each other in complete awe. Then finally I got out the words "Sorry" with a mumble, instead of the it's okay or don't worry about it that I expected to get, he pushed past me not saying a word, what the fuck was his problem? But then again, he also did look like he was in a hurry to get somewhere. I brushed it off and called back Erica, "Hey I'm done looking at books, I bought a couple, can you come pick me up?" I asked her over the phone "On my way, give me a sec!" And without another word she hung up. That's one things Erica never did, say goodbye. There was a 'See ya later Kate' every once in a while, but not often, saying bye just wasn't something she liked to do.
As her car pulled up, I smiled, I guess I never really get used to how beautiful it is, it's so shiny and enough to catch you staring at it, if it had eyes. "Hey, jump in" Erica yelled from the front of the building. I ran over with a couple of bags in my hands, "Jesus, more than last time Kate, how many of those do you read?" "All of them." I smiled back. The inside of her car had red LEDS, which made it even better, when I saw her pull up to our apartment I frowned. "Hey what happened to doing something fun tonight?" "Too tired, you spent too long looking at books today" she chuckled back. With an eye roll I jumped out of the car, "aren't you glad we don't have classes tomorrow?" She asked with a smile. "Wait. What? We don't?" I threw my hands up with a feeling of victory and replied "I'm going to be up on the roof all morning, so if you need me then you know where to find me!"
I pulled the key out of my purse as we walked up the long stairway, our room was room 301 so we'd gotten there pretty quickly. As soon as we arrived I threw most of my books down and took the top one from the pile which had really caught my eye, then ran up the rest of the flights of stairs to the rooftop. I walked out with a feeling of relief, finally relaxation. I could stay out here as long as I wanted tonight because there were no classes tomorrow morning. No worries in the world tonight and I can finally not think about everything else tonight, just escape in the pages of my new book. Until I finally opened my eyes as I walked out to the edge.
What the fuck.
