Warnings: Although this is my own OC x Hunter, you could imagine it as a 'x reader' if you'd like.
Also, very small Owl House 'Hollow Mind' spoilers.
(I posted this in another book a while back so if you've seen this before, that's why.)
———
Working in the Emperor's Coven was certainly a tough job, there's no doubt about that. You wake up early and immediately have to go to work and do your best to praise Emperor Belos and guard the castle along with the many places of the Boiling Isles.
That job is just as hard as an extremely powerful witch; but what if a human was working for the most powerful witch on the Boiling Isles?
Lumine marched through the long halls of the Emperor's Castle, making her way toward the throne room to meet up with Emperor Belos. She wore her white cloak with her hood up and her shiny lavender mask over her face.
She quietly entered the Emperor's throne room and shut the door gently, standing in front of it respectfully as she waited for Emperor Belos to give further instructions.
"Lumine... The exact witch I expected to see," Belos' gentle yet intimidating voice said.
Lumine took this opportunity to walk toward him, kneeling down on one knee, "Greetings, Emperor. You requested my presence and I came bearing my curiosity."
The Emperor took off his mask and smiled, "Actually, I had a mission for you. With the Golden Guard."
Lumine perked up in surprise, turning her head when she spotted the Golden Guard emerge from the shadows. She sighed, "Yes, Emperor Belos."
"Good. He will explain the mission on the way. Now hurry away now."
She nodded, watching as the Golden Guard led her outside of the throne room. He looked at her, his eyes squinting if he didn't have his mask on as he declared, "I know there's something suspicious about you, but I'm not sure what. That's why I requested this mission; I want to figure it out."
Lumine gulped before weakly chuckling, "Heh, good luck! There's nothing suspicious about me!"
"We'll see about that..." The Golden Guard turned back in front of him, "So here's the deal. I heard rumors of some criminals trying to enter the Emperor's Mind. I'm not sure why, but we have to figure something out. We're going to go to the Night Market and hang around until we see them, then we pounce. Got that?"
"Yes, sir." She saluted. He chuckled, "Good."
Lumine smirked suddenly underneath her mask, "So what makes you think I'm suspicious?"
He perked up, "Um, you're always hiding underneath that mask. We all know higher level Scouts, such as us, can take off their masks and hoods whenever as long as it's in a specific part of the castle. But you never do."
She scoffed, "I prefer to keep my face hidden," she eyed him, "I've never seen you take your mask and hood off..."
He laughed and took off his mask and hood, "Right! Now what about yours?"
She paused, "I don't want to."
"You scared, huh? Awww, the Lavender Soldier is scared!" He mocked, putting his white hood and golden mask on.
"Oh, I'm not scared. I'm just smart."
He looked at her curiously, "What do you mean?"
"Imagine if I was undercover for whatever reason and someone recognized my face because they had been within the castle at some point and just so happened to see my face then? That would destroy the whole mission."
The Golden Guard stayed silent after that, allowing Lumine to feel rather proud of herself.
They then continued to make their way to the Night Market, now walking in silence.
Once they found themselves at the Night Market, they both began watching the area for any suspicious activity, many scammers and sellers walking up to them thinking they were normal customers, only to back away from their presence when they realized their status.
The Golden Guard looked around cautiously, "Make sure to keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior..."
Lumine nodded, "Yes, sir."
They both stood next to each other, watching the Night Market carefully, only to begin groaning when nothing suspicious or interesting was going on. The Golden Guard turned toward Lumine, "So, do you... have a reason you're in the Emperor's Coven at such a young age?"
She shrugged, "Eh, Belos found me one day and just kind of... invited me into the Emperor's Coven. He said he could trust me."
He hummed in amusement, "That's nice."
More silence engulfed them.
Lumine groaned, "Nothing interesting or suspicious is going on around here! Are you sure those rumors you heard were... right?"
The Golden Guard sighed, "I'm not sure, but we shouldn't let our guard down. How about we sit down here and watch there so we're not standing the whole time?"
Lumine shrugged, sitting down against the wall the Golden Guard had pointed to. He followed her motions, sliding against the wall and sitting down.
"Uh, I don't think you ever told me your name," Lumine asked, looking around the Night Market. He looked around with her, responding with, "Uh, it's Hunter. What about you?"
"I'm Lumine, but my friends call me Lumi."
He hummed, "I've never heard of that sort of name."
She chuckled, nudging him with her shoulder playfully, "Gee, thanks, Hunter."
Hunter laughed along before he suddenly paused. He sighed and asked, "Is... there an actual reason you don't show your face and stuff?"
She shrugged, "I was told not to by Belos. I know exactly why, I just don't know how you and others would react."
"Well... it can't be that bad..." Hunter joked, faintly laughing. She laughed, "Maybe. But... fine. I'll show you but you have to promise that you won't freak out."
He nodded.
They both let their guard down as she began taking off her shiny lavender mask, revealing her face. She then hesitantly slid her cloak's hood down. Hunter gasped, covering his mouth; her ears were round. She sighed, putting her mask on but leaving her hood down, "Yeah... Belos told me everyone would freak out if they found out. There's another human on the Boiling Isles already... and now there's another one working for the Emperor? He said he didn't want to cause a panic or something."
Hunter paused before he looked at his gloved thumbs. Underneath his mask, he was very visibly flustered and embarrassed. He looked over at her, "I... I think it's kinda neat."
Lumine blew a raspberry at him, pulling her hood back up, "Yeah, right. This world is so fascinating! There's magic and everything! The human world is full of the same thing everyday: creeps, school work, blah blah blah."
Hunter laughed at her use of words and how she used her gloved hand as some sort of puppet, "It's kind of boring here once you get used to it. And don't worry... I don't think you being a human changes much."
Lumine had never been so glad she had that cursed mask covering her face as she felt her face practically glow from his comment. She stammered, "Um, thank you, I-I guess."
They both looked around the Night Market, going back to their mission when Hunter suddenly spotted a cloaked figure run into an alleyway. He stood up abruptly, grabbing onto Lumine's hand to help her up, and directed her over to where he saw the figure run off to:
"I'd love to hang out with you later, but for now, I'd like to focus on our mission, Lavender Soldier~"
