The overwhelming smell of disinfectant stung your nostrils. It made your eyes burn and it was nothing to do with the threat of tears that pulled from the depths of your anguished mind – of course not.

Your heart thundered in your ears, and you tried valiantly to at least steady your breathing, or you were going to end up in one of these damn rooms as well. You raced through the unfamiliar hallways in search of the correct room, cursing your decision not to intern here when you had the chance.

Where is it? 325, 326, 328... wait, what the fuck? Where is 327?!

Your feet skid to a halt on the tiled floor, and the squeak of your soles caught the attention of two men you only knew as brief acquaintances at best. The state of your overworked brain meant you had not seen them at all, had not noticed the looming presence of two males dressed in the familiar jonin uniforms nor the smell of blood, heavy enough to overpower the disinfectant.

A heavy hand fell to your shoulder mid-spin, trying to get your bearings and still puzzling over how a room could simply vanish? Snapping your head around; your gaze came to rest on the blood-soaked features of Asuma Sarutobi.

Instantly, you switched into work mode.

An expert eye took in the nasty gash that covered his left brow as the reason for the reddish-brown blood that smeared around his eye and down his cheek and neck. It had stopped bleeding but would need stitches to keep it from re-opening and your fingers were lifting to turn his chin when he cleared his throat loudly, enough to pull you out of your assessment.

"Y/n, I'll be okay," he assured with a determined nod of his head.

The dark-haired male looked over his shoulder and you followed his gaze to see Gai, leaning against the wall. The normally exuberant male was pale, and his lower lip quivered as he stared at you. His eyes were puffy and tender, not filled with their usual mirth and youthful good humour.

It was enough to cause your heart to palpitate even worse, sweat-slicked your palms as you gripped Asuma's forest green jonin vest. You tugged at him, shaking with all the strength you possessed. It shouldn't have been enough to make him budge but the Sarutobi swayed like a tree caught in a ferocious wind.

"Where is he?" you demanded.

Gai sniffled at the sound of your raw, broken voice and Asuma slid a hand through his hair. It was strange seeing him without a lit cigarette pressed between his lips but apparently, even he knew when it was best not to break the rules.

"In there," he pointed back with his thumb to a door that was tucked into the corner, "but listen, we gotta talk first. He –"

You brushed him off, rounding his imposing frame with eyes fixed on the door that now you could see clearly emblazoned with 327 next to the panel of frosted glass. Before you could reach for the handle, Gai intercepted, blocking the door with a lowered shake of his head. He refused to meet your eyes, content with inspecting the depth of the highly polished floor and you bared your teeth in annoyance.

"Hey – y/n. We're not tryin' to keep you from him, but you need to know -"

Anger exploded through your veins, hissing like an angry cat you turned back to Asuma who had followed you the few steps to the closed door.

"Tell me what? Why can't I just see him? You can spout your bullshit inside there," you yelled, pointing at the room you were desperate to enter.

Asuma sighed, his shoulders slumped in defeat as he rubbed at the back of his neck. You stared him down as if you weren't a good foot shorter and only equipped in the basic self-defence that all medical-nins were required to master.
