Sweet and sugar on the outside, with a heart of stone on the inside. That's certainly one way
you could describe Emily Payne. A cute strawberry blonde who also happens to be the most
popular girl in school. Everyone around her absolutely loves her. At least… They love what they
can see. The thing about Emily, is that despite how everyone would describe her, none of the
words they use are truly fitting.
Sure, in public she is kind and generous towards everyone she meets, but behind closed doors
that could not be any further from the truth. Hidden in the bottom left drawer of her dresser is a
little blue diary containing the truth behind her social mask and each day after school, she would
add something new to it. Today was no different.
Dumping her designer handbag down on her bedroom floor, she angrily stormed over to the
dresser and pulled out the little blue diary before reaching for a pen that was resting upon the
wooden surface. Opening it vastly and carelessly flipping forward to the next clean page she
angrily began to scribble words of hate and malice. This time however, she wasn't just writing
about a classmate she barely knew, or a teacher that had ticked her off, but instead one of her
closest friends. Madison Wilson. Halfway through her current sentence, her phone started
ringing, breaking her out of her hateful thought train. With a frustrated sigh, she put the pink pen
down and retrieved the ringing device before swiping to answer.
"Can I help you?" She almost yelled down the phone.
"Emily? Baby… is everything okay? You seem… well not like yourself." Her boyfriend, Jack
Rivers, voice came from the other end of the line.
"Oh!... Hey Jack-jack, sorry you caught me off guard, that's all." She apologised in a sickly
sweet tone.
"Not to worry. I can call back later if now is a bad time." He suggested with concern in his voice
despite remaining calm.
"Absolutely not. In fact, why don't you come over? My parents are still at work until later so we
will have the house to ourselves." She responded in a suggestive tone.
"Uhh… yeah. Sure. Be there in five. See you soon, love you baby. Bye." He concluded quickly
before hanging up.
As soon as the line went dead, Emily tossed her phone down on her bed and scrambled
around, quickly placing the book back in its rightful place. Turning to her full view mirror, she ran
a brush through her strawberry blonde curls three times and once she decided it looked perfect,
she turned her attention to her clothes.
"Yuck." She whispered under her breath.
Believing the outfit to be too old now that the day neared night, she walked over to her closet full
of expensive designer gear and picked out a pair of blue denim jean shorts, some black
leggings and a pink strapless top. Changing quickly, she made sure that she was looking her
best before finally sitting down to relax a little before Jack arrived there. Grabbing her phone,
she swiped to unlock it and began scrolling through her page on FlashMedia.com. Rolling her
eyes at some of the obviously desperate attention seeking posts on there, what ended up
catching her attention was a post made by her other best friend, Chloe Miller. It seemed that her
two best friends had failed to mention to her that they were throwing a house party. Gripping her
phone in anger, she quickly shut the screen off while fighting the urge to write in her book again
due to a lack of time. Instead, she silently plotted to crash their little party but in a way that
wouldn't make her look bad.
Hearing the familiar knock at the door that her boyfriend would always do to notify her that it
was him, she made her way down the stairs and opened the door. Throwing a huge smile on
her face so that he would not suspect that anything was up, she almost threw herself into his
hug as soon as he stepped through the door.
"Woah! Easy there tiger. It's good to see you too." He greeted her with a chuckle.
Stepping back from the embrace, she straightened herself up and closed the front door before
turning her full attention back to Jack.
"Did you have anything in mind for tonight?" She asked curiously.
"Not really. Did you?" He returned the question.
"Well actually… Chloe and Madison are throwing a party tonight. Wanna go?" She quizzed,
hoping his answer would be to her liking.
"Sounds like it could be fun. Count me in." He agreed.
Relief and satisfaction flooded through her, despite being angry with her best friends for
excluding her, she would never let them see. She had a much better plan than just turning up
and exploding with anger on them, she couldn't risk that in front of Jack. Rather than expressing
her true feelings, she would act like it never bothered her but strike at them when the time was
fitting. For now, she would act like a delicate butterfly. Later on she would sting like a wasp.
"Great. We should probably head there now then." She concluded, grabbing her puffer jacket
from one of the hooks on the wall.
After Emily had zipped up her jacket, Jack opened the door, allowing her to step through first.
As she passed him she smiled, leaned in and gave him a kiss on the cheek before heading
down the three steps onto the pathway. Once she felt his hand take her own, she started
walking at a steady pace towards his car which was parked on the roadside just a few houses
down from hers. Excitement bubbled inside her as she thought about what kind of night they
were both in for and her smile widened when she pictured the shock on Chloe and Madison's
face. It was that thought in particular that kept her from wanting to dig her claws deep into them.
