CONFUSION WAS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. Jade had absolutely no clue what she was doing with herself, and it was driving her mad. There were too many thoughts running around her head that she couldn't wrangle them all.
First, there was the task Harry had asked of her, which was to find out what Draco Malfoy was plotting. She wasn't sure whether Draco was involved with the Death Eaters, but his family's connection to Voldemort wasn't secret.
Lucius was a Death Eater during the war and resumed his role when Voldemort came back. He was arrested after the Battle of the Department of Mysteries last spring and had been in Azkaban since. Maybe he had passed the legacy onto Draco?
He was certainly up to something, though. The conversation she had overheard between him and Snape had confirmed that he had some task, whatever it was. Now the content of it was still a question in her mind.
She felt pressured to figure him out, but there was also the problem that they could not be in each other's presence without fighting, at least barring that one strange time. There was no way for Jade to genuinely get closer to Draco.
Sure, their tutoring sessions provided a great opportunity for her to extract the information she needs, but Draco would never reveal anything to her, and she could never fake interest in someone she utterly loathed.
Then there was Blaise. He was attractive and flirtatious- a great distraction. She knew whenever he was around she would be sure to have a laugh. But was it just fun, or was there more to it? She could not tell what he thought of it, but lately, she always seemed to run into him.
Then again, Draco entered the picture. Was Blaise's interest purely out of his own interest, or had Draco asked him to get close to her? From what she could tell, Draco was not very receptive to the idea of Blaise and her getting closer, but he always had a way of planting doubts in her head.
And then, of course, Eugenia Rosier and her cruelty never left the picture. Jade's daily nightmares continued, and each one left her more exhausted than the last. She wasn't sure what to do at this point. It had been ages since she had a good night's sleep. Maybe she could find a potion that could help. None of the draughts she had tried to date had been effective enough to ensure a restful slumber.
These thoughts played on a loop in her head as she prepared herself for the Slytherin party Blaise had invited her to. Jade desperately needed to rid herself of these thoughts, and alcohol might prove an effective measure, she thought.
"I suppose you're still going to that party?" Hermione asked her, bringing her back to reality.
Jade hadn't noticed Hermione even enter the room. It was Saturday, and everyone was with their friends somewhere around the castle or in the common room, so the girls' bedroom was empty except for herself.
"Yeah, I am," Jade said defiantly.
"Look, Jade, I'm just wary of that crowd. You know who their friends are." Hermione said softly.
Jade continued applying her makeup, ignoring her words.
"I trust you. And I trust you know what you're doing," Hermione added.
"Always," Jade said, "I'll be fine."
Hermione nodded, "Okay. Well, you look gorgeous."
She had just finished putting the finishing touches and looked into the vanity mirror. She had done a smoky eye and a bold red lip. Jade loved her black minidresses, so naturally, she was wearing yet another mini dress which she had paired with black ankle boots.
