We're All Just Eavesdropping On Everyone Else
"Oh my goodness! Your clothes! Here, let me help you," T.J. exclaims, picking up a cloth and dampening it with the water from her water-bottle.
"Don't bother," Jakob, grumbles, "She'll just spill something else."
I'm still in silence.
Jakob's suit is dark green and his shirt is a kind of cream silk colour. His shoes are black leather and so is his belt.
Our eyes lock and I see him squirm under my gaze.
Jeez, how hard am I staring?
He clears his throat and disappears to change.
A couple seconds later, a tall handsome guy I vaguely recognise bursts in and disrupts our quiet
He nods respectfully at me, "Niki, how've you been? Where's Jay?"
Once I hear him use Jakob's nickname, I can place him immediately.
"Daniel!" It's Jakob's best friend, he moved away a few years back, "I'm good! How are you? He's changing right now but I'm sure he'll be out soon,"
"I needed to ask him something... maybe you can help with that?" He looks expectantly at me.
I laugh, "What is it? I can't read minds you know, you're going to have to tell me."
He smiles at me.
And that's when I remember why we got along so well, we make each other softer, we're kinder in each other's presence, like we know we both have shit going on and neither of us want to make it worse.
"Have you seen Tera Jacky? I'm betrothed to her and I was told she'd be here," he tells me, frowning slightly.
"Do you mean T.J.?" I say, glancing over at her
She's rearranging the flowers, trying to give me and Daniel some privacy.
I know she's eavesdropping.
"Yes, T.J., have you seen her?"
"She's right over there," I say signalling for him to go over to her.
He takes a deep breath and strides over to her, pulling a massive bunch of white roses from behind his back.
As he taps her on the shoulder, and she spins around.
"Hello, love," he says.
Jakob decides that now is a good moment to barge into the room.
T.J. and Daniel don't notice him, but I have too.
"Be quiet! Our mates are falling in love, lets go!!" I whisper-shout.
I give him a moment to take in the scene and then drag him into the elevator.
Just before the doors close, I catch T.J.'s eye
"Go get him Teej," I mouth, using my nickname for her.
We start to go down and--
The elevator stops.
I jars
Whirs
And then is stuck.
"Shit," we both whisper.
