Quick A/n: I haven't seen any Kurt Kunkle x reader books yet so!! i decided to make one myself LMAO
Reader uses she/her pronouns.
This takes place before the events of the movie, in 2001 because I wanna try and make my own little plot for this book before we just jump straight into the movie's plot :)
"Class, I want you all to meet your new friend, Kurt Kunkle."
You, along with the rest of the kindergartners around you, pay close attention to the little brown haired boy that sticks close to the woman you call a teacher. He didn't seem to be that nervous honestly, smiling as he glanced around the room, but he still seemed just a tad bit shy with locking eyes with anyone.
"H- Hello," He waves timidly, and you and the rest of your classmates wave back happily. "Hello Kurt!" You all speak back loudly, and the teacher smiles in approval. She taps the little boy on the back, and he glances up at her. She gives him a reassuring look.
"Go on now, Kurt. You can sit wherever you'd like—we're all friends here!"
"He can sit with us at our table, misses Richardson!"
You send your friend, Rue, an incredulous look at how eager she looked for him to sit at you guys' table. It wasn't that you didn't want him to sit there, you just didn't know how to speak well to people. The boy was eager to come to your table, bright eyes locking with your own.
He sits in the seat directly in front of you, and you shift almost awkwardly as your heart pounds in nervousness. Without wasting any time, you're quick to pick up the color book in front of you and cover your face with it. Rue snickers as Kurt's face contorts, and she leans over to gently push the book down.
"Stop being so worried, (Y/n)! He's less nervous than you are, and he's the new kid!"
You frown at her words, but nonetheless, you sigh and decide to finally turn back to the slightly more anxious boy who gave you a toothy smile. Deciding to listen to your friend, you shoot him your own smile back.
Maybe becoming friends with him wouldn't be so bad after all.

"Tag! You're it!"
"OH COME ON!"
Your eyes were stuck scanning the book you recently took out of the library before they finally decide to glance up. Your eyes instantly fall onto Kurt, who was seen standing by your side almost awkwardly. It was obvious to you that he was having trouble fitting in with the rest of the kids, and you felt bad for the poor boy.
"So, uh... what are you reading?" You nearly jolt when his eyes connect with yours, and you instantly look away. He seems a bit hurt at this from how he shifts and scratches the back of his head, and you quickly answer so he doesn't get the wrong idea. "Uhm, I'm reading this," You hold the book up for him to see, and he leans down to where you're sitting a bit to read it.
"Johnny...Appleseed?"
"Y...Yeah, it's a good book."
He went to ask you a question, only for it to be cut off when one of your classmates, Jordan, to shout out. "Does anybody wanna be the clog in the toilet?!" You glance away quickly—you definitely did not want to play with anyone. Kurt, on the other hand, seizes this as his opportunity to make friends with the rest of the class.
"Yeah! I'll do it!"
You shoot him a surprised look, and he sends you double thumbs up before rushing away. You watch as Rue meets him halfway, grinning like crazy as she wraps an arm around his shoulders and boosts him up to the rest of the kids at the tube slid waiting. You shake your head, this wasn't going to end well at all.
Unsurprisingly, it doesn't go well. He ended up losing his grip the second another one of your classmates, Judy, slid down and added onto the pile, making them all yell out in shock when he collapsed and fell out onto the ground. Everyone was disappointed, especially Jordan, who was angry enough to even shout out an entire curse word at him.
"Hey, dude! Knock it off!" Rue, thankfully, pushed Jordan off his back, saying that he was just trying to have fun with everyone. Jordan was glaring at them both, but before the commotion could get worst, the bell had rang for recess to be over nonetheless. As everyone turned to line up in front of the teacher, you stalked your way over to Rue and a downcast Kurt, who was clutching his pants legs tightly.
"Hey, man, don't be down," Rue patted his shoulder, face grim. "You did your best, and it was just a game. Don't let that punk Jordan get to you, alright?" Kurt managed a weak smile and she grins back softly and pats his shoulder twice before walking away to the line up. You silently make your way next to his side, book closed underneath your armpit.
"You, uhm..." Kurt glances at you, and sees just how flustered you are to speak. You, quickly looking around, make sure no ones watching, before leaning into him to whisper into his ear-
"I think you looked cool trying your best out there."
Kurt gasped, and when he pulled back, he watched as you quickly scurried your way to line without making any sort of eye contact with him at all. His hand raised to touch his ear briefly, before he found himself smiling.
Sure, he embarrassed himself in front of everyone and let them down, but at least he made a friend out of it.
